ARMA III - 77th JSOC Servers

Hey all.

I managed to get my PC to not crash (no idea how) long enough (all day) to enjoy some time on my favourite ARMA III server, the 77th JSOC Invade and Annex. It's a co-op mission, 70~ players Vs the world. You get a main and secondary objective to complete.
The main is basically control a point on the map for a while, the secondarys are usually more varied and harder.

I was wondering if any other ED/Arma players use that server?
I also go by Cosmic Spacehead. Say hi if you see me. And I do apologize if I shoot you in the face. My TV doesn't make telling friend from foe easy. Lol

Anyhoo, the 77th JSOC server is a "milsim" server, so most of the shenanigans are kept to a minimum, and admin are never far away. Although we do have fun.
But we try to keep it feeling real.
This can often mean you're stuck at base for 20 minutes waiting for a chopper to take you to the AO, only to be shot down during landing, because your squad leader picked a bad AO, or the recon team did a poor job of recon. lol

Either way, it requires a similar level of patience to ED. And is a lot of fun.
Just follow the rules (mainly avoid team killing, and don't mess around).
Just don't expect instant action, like CoD or Battlefield.

Anyhoo, I'm going to be playing that for a while, so if you see me around, say hi. :)
I'm usually a Marksman, because they're one of the few classes with a good scope, and this helps limit my friendly fire. :D
I also sometimes command the UAVs, although, I stopped when I accidentally wiped out an entire squad instead of the tank they was hiding from.... :D
I blame the dodgy laser designator. :p

Anyhoo, if you're looking for a server, just search "77th JSOC" there's only a couple. One is usually full. Lol

Haven't played ARMA for a few weeks...distractions and stuff. I'll pop on over to the 77th JSOC, I'm sure I've played there before. I'll have a look at the required mod list and make sure I have all of them. Catch you there at some point Cosmic :)

The 77th doesn't have a required mod list, it runs from vanilla, but does have mod packs on the steam workshop that are allowed.
Just search "77th modpack" I think.

I likely won't actually be online until at least Wednesday though.
And it'll be during the day, UK time. I rarely get it play evenings and weekends. :(
Which is good really, because those two servers would be completely full during those times. :D

I forget how to add friends to steam... I don't even know my own name.
I'm such a steam loner... Lol

Oh wait, that was easy. I googled "steam Cosmic Spacehead".
There I Am!

Feel free to add me. :)

I just (this morning) had my first ever parachute insertion in to an AO.

It was amazing. We jumped from 4km up, and we all (mostly) fell together, aiming for a small village to use a cover.

We all pulled out chutes at around 200m, and I was the only one to actually land in the village. Everyone else missed. And all our medics got shot down in mid-air. Lol
It was brilliant! I almost got stuck on a roof top, but I managed to miss it.

My graphics settings (on the server) only go to about 1.8km, so I was basically falling blind for 2.2km, with just a HUD marker to guide me. Still hilarious fun.

Shame the squad basically fell apart after we landed. With no medics to revive anyone, all the stragglers got picked off, and the squad leader didn't know what to do.
Me and another marksman got a good spot and were holding the hill where the AI was coming from, like epic commandos, until the other squad managed to push up to our position. But by that time, all the dead members of our squad had auto respawned.

Then I had to go to work (which was good because I also ran out of ammo, due to the parachute taking up my backpack slot!)

:D

I highly recommend it.

I've been playing Bohemia's mil sims since the Op Flashpoint days, and I still dip into A3 from time to time - nowhere near as much as I used to a few years back though, time was I'd be good for 2-3 hours a day. Mostly faffing about with the editor in SP to be fair.

If I do spin it up in the near future, I'll be in touch!

Thanks for the heads up, will check! Yeah also been playing since Op Flashpoint, although admittedly not so much these days. I blame Elite!

This is a good reminder that I bought A3 in a sale some time ago and have not yet even installed it! This weekened may see me finally doing it!

It's a brilliant game. Requires a good amount of patience though, a bit like ED.

Some servers are designed for instant action, but Arma's controls are typically "clunky", and don't make for good fast paced CQC action like CoD or Battlefield. Infact, it can be so clunky, getting in a door can be troublesome, and resting your weapon correctly on a window can take several tries. Lol
But if you've played any of the previous games by Bohemia Interactive, you'll know what to expect.

Most of my game time [on the 77th JSOC Server] is sitting at base with my squad waiting for a chopper, or sitting on a hill in overwatch, picking off targets at up to 1km, or laying on the floor waiting to be revived.

That said, it was quiet on the servers this morning, and me and 4 others went to the AO alone. It was hilarious fun.
I got 71 kills in 90 minutes. And had to hide from 3 tanks. Not bad considering I was only a marksman. :D

The best vanilla servers are the two 77th JSOC ones, followed by Zeus. Zeus one of the oldest clans in the game, they were about all through Operation Flashpoint, and still going all these years later. People get confused and think they are a Zeus game mode.

Sometimes you get lucky on the 77th server and can join a squad and get a ride to the AO pretty quickly, but that is rare. Usually you are waiting for a squad to get assembled, geared up and transport organised. Still it's worth the wait since everyone communicates and does their job. It surprised me when I discovered them last year that a public vanilla server would have actual team players. Since the release of DayZ Arma has been inundated with toxic millennials that make childish noises and yell mom jokes. Thankfully the serious coop players didn't get to experience the brunt of this with the toxic players populating King of the Hill, Life and Wasteland servers.

Heh parachuting medics probably wouldn't have a medkit since they cannot carry a backpack as well as a chute. Unless that has been scripted to the 77th JSOC yet? Some servers allow a parachute and backpack. I forget with the 77th since I rarely do drops there. Good to see someone else from here playing there. It makes sense since Arma is a huge open world game and shares some things with Elite. Imagine Arma style space legs man. Whole planets mapped out VBS Blue anyone?

Agreed, it may have some clunky UI elements compared to other 'arcade / blockbuster / pop' games (take your pick!), but on the right server, with a like minded bunch, there is no better multiplayer FPS with that degree of gameplay depth and fun, IMHO.

The variety of experience you can have is impressive. It also takes a little while to adjust to the world (think ahead, use cover, don't give yourself away with sound or noise until you're ready, headlook is critical etc etc) - but once you get the hang of it, everything seems a little shallow by comparison!

I would love to see Elite borrow a few elements from the Arma series to get groups playing together quickly and provide some tactical, objective-based combat one day. But as this is the sort of game that's usually built by client-server architecture and not peer-to-peer, I can only hope a way can be found ;)

Back in the Arma 2 days, the Domination and Insurgency maps were a blast. Maybe see you on 77th JSOC some time! o7
