Arrange pieces symmetrically

I'd like these square building pieces the same distance from the kiosk window each side, but they insist on snapping to the right of each grid line. I have tried using X to toggle the advanced placement handles but for some reason it doesn't seem to work at the moment - I mean nothing happens when I press X

Those pieces sit in the corner of the grid. You need to rotate the piece so it is in the other corner of the grid.
