Arrogant NPCs

Am I the only one bothered by how arrogant the NPC pirates seem to be? I get that it's just a scripting thing, but hearing a pirate bleat "just give me X tons of cargo and this can all be over" for the tenth time or so when he has no shields and 10% hull and I'm untouched indicates either extreme arrogance or extreme stupidity. Yes, it'll "all be over" when I finish you off and pick the choice materials from your charred carcass! It's like being mugged, but after beating the mugger into a bloody heap on the ground he's still asking for your wallet. Kinda dumb, pretty unbelievable, and blows the immersion out of the water. Not that getting mugged by Carlos SpicyWeiner was that immersive to begin with, but at least I can get a laugh out of that part...

A little from column A, a little from column B.

Yeah it is a bit silly. They do have messages expressing dismay at being pummelled (can't remember any at the moment) but they should send these out earlier, maybe when their hull hits 50% or something.

Imagine if the AI was able to, on occasion, just beat you down to the point you had to leave, or die. Pick one. Do you want harmless (but annoying) AI, or something befitting its title? :)

I do rather like the "I must away to repair but when I return I shall have vengeance!" type running away messages. They are quite quaint. Then again, the AI is quite quaint, at this point. Lord I hope the thargoids aren't as , or as irrelevant.

Honestly, it makes WAY more sense to me when they get low and try to run, like "oh man I picked the wrong transport to attack". Yeah, they DO have that little "oh I didn't expect this" message when they get low, but then it's right back to "by the way, cargo plz?" 3-4 more times before you finish them off. Like I'm gonna think "sure I'm winning this fight by a tremendous margin, but lemme fail my mission and let the guy go just cause I feel bad".

If their actions were a reflection of their commentary, then it wouldn't be so silly.

I ignore all that commentary, the only one I pay attention to are the announcements that signal an interdiction, gives me time to slow down, drop to normal, stop, deploy, set pips and get ready to shake-n-bake another NPC, singular or plural.

They do need to get spicier.

Once, gathering mechanical components in an Anarchy, I interdicted a low-rank NPC, who freaked out. That was pretty funny.

Found it a bit odd when some NPC said "The eagle is in the nest, repeat, the eagle is in the nest.", and upon checking him noticed that he didn't even fly an Eagle, and neither did I.

They can often be arrogant, but they can also be quite different.

Once i dropped into a mission signal source. Was in a Python i think, but not really combat fitted. Ok for handling 1 on 1 encouters.

So, to my horror, as i apporached the floating goodies, in dropped 9 ships.

"Ah, there he is lads, the plan worked"

Darnation i thought. But i'm not leaving without what i came for. No way can i take on 9, but maybe i can grab the goods and then get out of dodge, so i run to scoop what i need.

Scan starts.

Good, not shooting yet, might be able to do this in time.

"Oh, sorry to have bothered you. We will just be on our way"

And they left, all 9 of them.

Not sure it was because i was flying in a Python or because of my combat rank. Or maybe it was just because i hadn't got anything in my cargo hold.

Was rather funny anyway.

Tbh that "Give me X amount of cargo" is the most sophisticated the AI gets, and a STEP in the right direction. Everytime i read random, regurgitated spam lines, in local chat which dosent even make sense! It makes me realise how empty and scripted the galaxy is.

Firstly lets scrap all random local chat that makes no sense, i dont need to know that the Gym is malfunctioning on some Beluga in the middle of nowhere ok. Then; lets make some more realistic radio chatter, if im being interdicted by a pirate, hows about they say "dont make this hard on yourself commander, cut your engines and i'll make it quick" or something, not "YOUR DEAD" or "IM GONNA BOIL YOU UP" seriously its like being chased as a kid by the local bully with an IQ of -10.

Then lets move on to having interdictions actually make sense, like; a harmless shielded sidewinder NOT trying to pull my fully loaded Anaconda out of cruise saying "YOUR DEAD", just shows how unbearably stupid the AI actually is.

Once we get the appropriate skill level attacking the appropriate people, (this ties in to your post OP) lets make Interdictions a challenge so that they actually serve a purpose other than "Meh now i gotta waste time getting rid of this guy" moments.

We could, at this point, increase the cooldown of the FSD when submitted so that you cant escape every, single, time...Before the enemy even deploys hardpoints or in some cases, EVEN ARRIVES! Make interdictions an "OH ****" moment not an "AH " moment.

Then maybe, in the future; we can have some voiced radio chatter when being dicted with maybe an animated comms window of the pilot.

Make the universe feel alive, make sense, and less stale.

Arrogant? Plain stupid and so scripted it's annoying only. "Glad i found you first". Found? You could't find your stern even if handed on the silver paltter, not to mention to find a hauling pilot with any cargo. Surprisingly I'm being interdicted only when I have my cargo filled. I'm never harassed while empty. Precognition? Uber SC scans? Either, since scanning would make them think twice before "all that tasty cargo" while hauling biowaste.

Pirates are needed, pirates are a mean to make space "dangerous" and somewhat a reason for that mediocre payouts. But with current design taking anything more valuable than a nail means you get a mandatory tail. Stupid, annoying and persistent tail that sooner commit suicide than let go. This design is so predictible and unfun I'm in no mood to discuss it further.

Haha forgot about those "The rumour was true! Glad i found you first!"

What...the rumour that i picked up 1ton of Polymers from a mission reward that even i didn't realise i was carrying is true? And that, given your previous comment, you and several others have been chasing me round the galaxy for it?! You guys are getting pretty damned desperate!

Once, I picked up some escape pods in deep space. Apparently, some random pilot got the email about it, because they wandered on by to... steal occupied escape pods? What?

I also learned that even if you jettison cargo in supercruise (sucks to be you, whoever was in those pods), the pirate can STILL demand cargo that you do not have. Outrunning that one was annoying.

I wonder what happens if you just give someone a UA that you picked up... Can you just follow them until it rots off their cargo hatch?

I had a pirate FDL pop up 500ly from the nearest starport, saying "The rumour was true! Glad i found you first!", after I randomly picked that system to jump in to from my nav panel. I was on the way back from a two week exploration trip too.
How did he know? How did he get there in the time it took for me to select that system and jump in?

It's bizarre.

We do need more dialogue for NPC's though, and a bit smarter use of said dialogue, to prevent the shieldless Harmless Eagle attacking my battleconda saying "how is this happening?!". Lol
