Hail, CMDRs!

Welcome to the library of the famous relic hunter Indiana Solo! He's out smuggling artifacts right now, but feel free to browse his notes. Who am I? Oh, no one. Just the janitor 'round these here parts.

We are The Canonn. Launching human history into the future.

Fear Nothing CMDRs

Unknown Artefact:
How To Obtain: These are usually found in Strong Signal Sources that contain a Navy Convoy consisting of 1 Federal Dropship, 2 Vultures, 2 Anacondas, and 1 Lakon type-9 that carries the UA in its hold. Upon dropping into the Strong Signal Source NPC dialog will occur remarking on strange system failure and mentioning the odd cargo. If you see this dialog prompt, IMMEDIATELY scan the T-9 for cargo. It is recommended that you bring a Frame Shift Wake Scanner, along with the Cargo Scanner, as the T-9 has been known to jump out when fighting starts. Obviously you will also need a frameshift drive interdictor in order to pull the fleeing T-9 out of supercruise again. Players have been overwhelmed and killed by this convoy so I must issue a warning: Only attempt to pirate a UA with a strong wing of capable CMDRs. If you do not have access to higher tier ships or lack the skill and know-how to pirate a Navy Convoy, but you have the patience, the UA can eat through the cargo hold of the T9 so that you can scoop it. Alternatively, there have been several confirmed reports of UA appearing in Weak Signal Sources as well. Upon salvaging one of these UA your ship will begin experiencing malfunctions and module damage will occur much the same way toxic waste rots the inside of ships. There has never been a sighting of a UA in Unidentified Signal Sources. It will tear through your cargo hold eventually if you do not repair your ship.

Where To Obtain: Timocani & 109 Virginis systems have had the most hits for UA appearing in both Strong & Weak signal sources. It is unknown what systems are capable of spawning UA and why.

In Game Description: Only recently discovered, these mysterious artefacts currently have no designation. Despite much conjecture as to the nature of these objects, it appears that the scientific community is unwilling or unable to openly identify the artefacts origins. Such mystery only serves to make these objects more widely sought after by wealthy individuals and organisations alike, no matter that their unidentified status automatically prohibits them from being sold on any legal market.

Galactic Average Price: 242,485 CR (75% if stolen from the Type-9)

UPDATE:
A new type of SSS has been found in HR 1185! Here you will find a UA floating by itself in normal space. It does not degrade in this state, and requires only cargo space to scoop! Much easier than the T9 convoy method!

Unknown Artefact Test Results:
An Unknown Artefact has been donated to the museum for me to play around with for a couple of hours! Here are the results of my personal investigation. These results can also be found on the Wiki.

-Tests are performed with two pilots present.
-Scanning tests are done in normal space.
-All tests with the UA next to other items are tested both in normal space and in cargo holds.
-Location tests are done both in the cargo hold and in normal space if possible.
-In the case of Polaris, having a UA in your hold will not allow you to make the jump in-system.

Proximity = Audio, purplish particle effect, and glowing
Cargo hold = Modules lose integrity over time. The more UA in a ship the faster the deterioration. The UA will eventually tear through your cargo hold if you do not maintain your ship.

Unknown Artefact Visual Analysis:
Assumed to be Thargoid. Most efforts are going into Audio analysis for the moment. I will update as the facts are released.
Unknown Artefact Sound Analysis:
The UA appears to emit mrose code that relates to the nearest celestial body.

A theory on the method of the UA sound generation has been put forth by Bitstorm. He says it better than I ever could, so I will simply link their explanation here.

So the thing yesterday.

i'll just put up all the info and people can make their own minds up...

Every now and then people will say well the purrs cant be random because there's never a string of three consecutive highs/lows. My reply is well there's a difference between true-random and pseudo-random, the bulk of ED is procedurally generated and it would not surprise me if they just have a few api calls that pull numbers from procedurally generated pools.

Of course this is just guess work, we have no idea how Frontier go about generating pseudo-random (if indeed this is what they do).

But then last night this appeared, it's about turrets of all things....

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=160794&p=2456434&viewfull=1#post2456434

Specifically this :

Let that sink in for a sec.

To generate something random they take add a number of differing sine waves together then adjust for whatever is required.

It seems to fit perfectly.

This for me explains why we never see groups of three or more, yet there's no apparent pattern.

If you don't know what I'm talking about it's this sort of thing :

http://www.atariarchives.org/dere/pic7_10.gif

That's a simple example but two sine(ish) waves combining into a third wave. Of course Frontier's will be out of sync so less regular but the point is there will be a semi-regular oscillating pattern there.

At this point I'm thinking that has to be it, but is it provable?

So my line of thinking is, well if we graph the points can we visually see this effect?

And here's the result, this is the high/low state and the time of each purr :

https://www.dropbox.com/s/3edfp46x8xvcda7/Screenshot 2015-07-18 13.57.41.png?dl=1

+1 = high -1 = low.

The zeros (the orange ones) are where there would be purrs but theyre missing or quietened, the gaps, those would be either a 1 or a -1, I've just set them to zero.

It's hard to be exact as the zeros change the curve but roughly it almost looks like two waves, a faster one and another maybe half the wavelength.

And given the pattern is essentially a combination of 2 or more sine waves my thinking was it may actually now be possible to infer the missing purrs.

Here's a Google spreadsheet, feel free to mess, the idea was I can drop 1 or -1 into the orange zero bits to "rebuild" the wave and therefore find the missing purrs. For example in the above I think you can say with a high certainty that at least one of the 3rd/4th 0 points would be a -1.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hYabz1D5HUsmj45kl0gdr_7aCMoqKspwHGwcZDyvA4E/edit?usp=sharing

^^ On this it seemed a good idea at 4:30am this morning! Today I'm not sure it's doable though. Still too much guesswork but it's fun to try and see what comes out - give it a go! Add in the missing 1,-1s.

There's also something called fourier analysis which takes data points and tells you what combination of waves would produce the pattern (and could therefore possibly fill in the missing purrs) but that's way beyond my ability.

So yeah that's it, make your own minds up, I might be wrong but the above combined with the evidence showing that it looks like CMDRs hear differing purrs :

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=162998&p=2541551&viewfull=1#post2541551

I think is a pretty strong argument that the purrs are pseudo-randomly generated, separately on each CMDRs ED client, from an algorithm with is essentially a combination of two or more sine waves.

I don't want to completely write the purrs off because there may still be something in them but I think if there is something to see there, then it will be something common to all CMDRs viewing a given UA. (cycle length for example)

Addendum....

So on from that and a little bit madcap. There's another theory which I think's interesting, is rather unlikely but would be very cool and could be another way to fill in the missing purrs.

It goes like this....

Assuming the purrs are generated from a pseudo-random generator as described above, and we KNOW the the turrets wavering motion is pseudo-randomly generated (since a dev has explicitly said so).

Then are the purrs and the turrets using the SAME generator or different ones?

Heh, do you see where I'm going?

It may be possible (but I think really unlikely) that the wavering of a turret's targeting reticule may align with the high/lows of the purrs. =p And that when the purrs go silent the turret (like a compass) will tell us what they would have been. =p

I've finally lost it haven't I.

AI Relic:
How To Obtain: These are found in Strong Signal Sources where Anaconda Pirates use them as a trap. When you attempt to scoop the AI Relic, 2-3 Anacondas will jump in and ambush you. Some dialog occurs when this happens.

Where To Obtain: Any system, Strong Signal Source.

In Game Description: A collection of highly illegal AI remnants. These items are of extreme interest to various shady organisations an remote cults. Their almost mythical status has led to a huge amount of counterfeiting, further inflating the value of items with a clear and proven history. It is uncertain whether any of these pieces actually retain the AI personality that was originally present within.

Galactic Average Price: 132,000 CR
Soontill Relic:
How To Obtain: Bought and sold as a rare good commodity in Cheranovsky City, Ngurii system.

Where To Obtain: Cheranovsky City, Ngurii system.

In Game Description: A slab of unidentified material covered in pictographs of unknown origin. This relic is part of a cache of similar artefacts that were uncovered by explorers researching lost alien civilizations in the Soontill system. Sold by Garry's Reclemations, Cheranovsky City, Ngurii.

Galactic Average Price: 17,000 CR
Ancient Artefact:
How To Obtain: These are relatively simple to find. Drop into a Weak Signal Source and you will have a chance to come accross these. There are also missions available that will ask you to track some down. These missions greatly increase your chance of finding one in a Weak Signal Source.

Where to Obtain: Any system, Weak Signal Source.

In Game Description: Highly prized by collectors, the movement of recovered artefacts is strictly controlled by a number of authorities around the galaxy. Fortunately a lucrative black market offers savvy explorers with means to find reliable buyers for any ancient treasures.

Galactic Average Price: 5,000 CR

In the other thread I had suggested someone who does get their hands on one of these 'Unknown Artifacts' might try listening to the object in various systems in the galaxy to see if the sounds change in any way.

My thought here is that it may be more homing beacon than coded message.

I'd join the hunt but I am 6000ly out and currently moving IRL. :)

Anyway, didn't want the idea lost.

Thanks!

Also, many, many, many kudos and Rep for keeping this going!

agreed! once we have found one I'm sure there will be huge discusion on where to take it, and what kind of tests to perform. it will be a glorious day for science! and thank you, sir, for taking the time to read my post!

Hmmmm - might be! Maybe it gets more clear the closer you get to the destination.

I would hope that once we find it, something like this would have to occur to make the mystery last longer! I have a FSD wake scanner attached to my ship just incase scanning it will force me to jump into witch space and into a thargoid's living room.

Good idea to give it some specific attention :)

I'm sure some folks involved would "reimburse" a potential finder/smuggler not interested in the story well beyond its Black Market value for handing one over...
I sure would - how does, say... 100+ tons of Palladium sound ? :D

Method:
The only verified method of finding one of these is an EXTREMELY rare drop (1 per week) from a WSS. Any one who has proof otherwise would render our entire search moot upon discovering another way. That is, unless they were troll of the year and wanted 200,000 instead of fame and glory. Speaking of which I will personally give 1 million to any money hungry smuggler who stumbles across one of these Unknown Artefacts.

I am willing to negotiate :)

Sure why not
100 tons of Palladium for a Unknown Artefact

I'd need to get a type 6 wont I, as Palladium is 99% likely only available from Outposts right?

No, every Industrial Extraction System sell them in their Stations (if it's a higher populated System), so any such transaction doesn't really restrict the Ship type.
Lots of very remote/low-population Extraction Systems only have Outposts, however.

The only caviat would be the receiver of the Artifact - after all, for as long as Cargo is in the Ship... no changing of Ships possible ;)

In any case the reward is offered.
Concerns of logistics and me handle on an if and when basis

Have you listened to them?

Michael

We haven't changed the spawn rate, they are exceedingly rare though and can only be found within a certain region of space - that does include multiple systems though.

Michael

i know Michael said they were in Deep space however im unsure if deep space is what he ment by region or if he means a region of the galaxy

Certain regions of the galaxy.

Michael

that answers that :D

Just a thought, probably nothing, and I might have missed this change somewhere in the past buuuut what about those systems in the Pleiades nebula that were locked? They don't seem to need a permit anymore...
Might be nothing, or totally unrelated and completely dumb. Also someone should've probably been there since 1.2 by now.

So uh, go look there!

*sets course in the opposite direction*

On a seriouse note, I do think that these artifacts may be found within a reasonable distance from inhabited sectors, even though the trailer does indeed indicate otherwise, which might be random, or not... Also reading into Michaels comments he first mentions "a certain region of space", singular. Might also be nothing significant.

TLDR; Come on.. wasn't that long.. Anyways, nothing to add, move along. :)

Frustratingly, I'm sure I remember picking up an Alien Artifact at some point in the past. My problem is that I have no idea where; back then, I spent most of my time either in Alliance space (good) or on the 70+ stop rares route (really, really unhelpful).

EDIT: Definitely came across a few Unknown Artifacts, too, but didn't bother picking them up 'cos I had a hold full of rares. Feel like a bit of an idiot right now.

Micheal did say regions. But he also failed to specify what qualified as a region as well as what sets the UA regions apart from others. If we assume for a sec that these regions are within human space (the natural habitat of signal sources) we can look at Timocani and it's neighbors to find clues. For example, planet atmosphere. Thargoids specifically favourite ammonia based planets. That is only viable assuming the UA is thargoid. Next, we look at population or government. If all the systems around Timocani are similar in nature up to say, 10 ly, then it's safe to assume we can find clues Within the systems that make them unique. I think that we were intended to discover a UA organically and so far I think we have. We now need to refine our search given clues with in the game And it's mechanics. I'm sure Fdev didn't write up all those planetary and system descriptions for nothing!

I think these are like painite and not even in the game yet and FD are having a right giggle about people looking for them.
