Artistic inspiration

I never really got into the Frontier series (it was too hard for me), but remember the original Elite with enormous fondness, hence my decision to fund the Kickstarter. One of the strongest memories I have from when I was 14 and visiting the eight galaxies on my ZX Spectrum was allying the game with some of the great artwork knocking around at the time. It was with some interest that one of the geezers on Lave Radio made this same connection in relation to the space-station mock-ups sent on the recent newsletter.

The simple polygon craft really allowed me to imagine the rest with images like those of Peter Elson below. The idea that the design team are channeling such work is great. Really great. Properly exciting. This is going to be a great looking game if nothing else.

Imperial art.

Yeah agree, the artwork we have seen so far for ED looks stunning, i cant wait to just fly around and take in the planets, and the view of the city's from space, take in the design of my ship, and so so much more!

Am interested in any Imperial/Fed artwork, and love posters/banners that promote themes to do with them(more a side line to the actual playing the game)
and yes, some artwork like the one below promotes a different Empire/Free Fed, but it kinda fits into the kind of imagery that i want, such as a strong but more enlightened Empire of ED.

Hopefully as the months go by we get more info/art to do with all factions, and of course more great space/ship designs!

I'd have to say for me it was always Chris Foss's work that blew me away as a kid. The art work he did through my mind into the depths of sci-fi outer space and when the Elite games came along, I was able to actually get out there [in a way] and live some of the stories I'd read about and seen in the images.

It was utter bliss ...

Beautiful stuff .... just beautiful stuff really. ED is going to through my mind back out there, and like many of you I can wait. [Well I/we can, but you know what I mean.] If they pull off modeling solar systems with orbital bodies right, it is going to be a dream just to go out sight seeing in the galaxy, let alone any of the trading, fighting stuff.

It's great guy's , the artwork is truly amazing to look at, if it's going to look as good in game we are all in for a real treat, there nothing better then to depart from a station and take in all the sights, also the history interconnected with will make it so complete. :)

You have probably already seen this, but I particularly like this video as it explains stuff I never even knew about.

Yes am loving the artwork so far, and hopefully more will add pics and their take on what ED universe means to them as time goes on.
Mobius own art work is great to in his wallpapers thread......by the way Degsy great thread! :)

This pic below is the sort of image i like to think of for the Empire of ED, however i think the Devs probably have other ideas(but till then, its open season!) :D

THIS.

Chris Foss's work just... does something to me that other Sci-Fi art doesn't. It really does tell an entire sotry in a single picture - fromt he look of the tech to the situations and compositon.

No one does deep, deep, deeeeeep future like him.

ED could do a lot worse than channelling a whole hell of a lot of Foss for their visual style (which they seem to be doing... in a slightly "cleaner" way).

The TTA books "Great Space Battles" and "Spacewreck" were the two huge influences on my tender young mind that turned me sci-fi. I rediscovered them tucked into a box that came out of the loft during a recent move. The (now slightly battered and well-loved) books are these days pored over by my 4yr old son :)

Geraldine - is that some sort of Trojan on that website? It pops up a fake 'security alert' window for me :S

If your talking about the TTA books summery, the only thing the site wants to do is install some media plugins. I just ignore it. If its the Vimeo page with the vid, then I dont know. That works just fine for me.

I see some ships here that are similar to those in the Terran Trade Authority books.

Someone by the name of Adrian Mann created a vid of some of them in action. Here have a peek. :)

I never knew of that video Geraldine, so seriously .... a BIG "thank you" for pointing us in its direction. I have that book and many others like it packed away in storage, I may have to dig them out for the fun of it. To see all of those ships I fantasized about fully "realised" in those 3d renderings, well ... truly amazing. Crazy thing is, I sat here watching the video and naming off the ships as I watched. Unbelievable.

Once again, thank you for the link Geraldine, that just made my day. I think I'll go do a "Jonty", I'm in a very good mood now. :)

Your welcome PacalB :)
Funny thing is when you do look at the books , you can "see" their influences today in all sorts of things from Babylon 5, Firefly to the Homeworld series. The TTA books really show what the word "visionary" actually means

I do hope one day the publisher does a re-release of the whole collection, even PDF versions would be nice. :)

You know folks, with all these nostalgic images resurfacing here, it got me to dig out one of my old TTA books, Spacewreck - Ghostships and Derelicts Of Space. Now, I'm not sure if this has been brought up before but I really do think the vibe of what's in this book, stories and such could possibly be added in to Elite in some form and style.

Remember the effects the story of "Space Dredgers and Generation Ships" [Original Elite] had on the explorer/pilots mind? The mere mention of those things in the book led to many actively seeking these out, [though in vain as they weren't really there.] Still, no one knew this but everyone lived in hope and expectation that one-day they would be found.

So here's my point, if we had unrelated very short stories on top of [after research] dangerous areas, planets. systems [high radiation, anomalous space events etc, etc] and plus unknown space disasters peppered about the edges of the unknown galaxy, these things could become an alternative leading point to future exsoitic technologies introduced into the game.

Example; an explorer finds a wreck out in the depths of uncharted space or planetside and brings back some of that strange tech, [be that a scan or a actual part.] It gets researched by said factional group and then is spread in a limited fashion through said empire/faction.

This creates a deeper sense to exploration in the vast unknown and a mild advantage between empires/faction who first gain access to these exceptionally rare and hard found [researched] technologies. What is also sort here, is the almost haunted house feeling of the unknown but in the deep space and unknown ships form.

I would go as far as saying, from time to time there should be strange "unexplained sighting events" that very rarely/randomly happen to players explorers right out on the fringes of explored space. Why? Because there's nothing more powerful than stories, hearsay, gossip of the strange and unknown activities coming from pilots who've returned from the depths deep of space.

Your thoughts people?

The Epsilon Queen
"Everything about the journey of the luxury liner, Epsilon Queen, was routine. She had travelled from Mars to Alpha Centauri III over one hundred times, but what emerged from warp drive was not the proud, sleek shape of the ship that entered it."

The Warthog
"The Warthog entered Federation territory unannounced at over 4 times the speed of light. No known craft was capable of these speeds at this time and its appearance triggered a full military alert. Its exit from hyperspace proved at once that it did indeed come from beyond the Perimeter."

I like that, im certain though it has been raised in other threads to include lovely things to discover in game.. these are wonderful paintings... almost to the standard that I work to.
