ARX? Sigh. I thought I paid for a full game...

I thought I paid for a full version of Elite Dangerous when I bought it. But as I'm progressing through the game I see there are some things, not major ones, just "nice-to-haves", for which you have to spend more money to buy ARX, some kind of in-game currency, in order to change the paint job on a ship. Let me just say, as a newbie to this game, that I hate it. It makes me feel exploited. The game has a steep learning curve and the documentation and tutorials are already outdated or poor for newbies. But ARX on top of all that? what?

ARX is not in-game currency, it is cosmetic store currency which can be both earned through general gameplay and bought with real-world cash.

The cosmetics on the whole are not required to play the game, they are "fluff" or "flavour" only and can on the most part be ignored if you wish.

You only bought the game on Saturday and are already complaining about ARX ! I'd say you are off to a good start for the Forum membership 🤭

:) You're right. The best thing about this game is the wonderful forum members who are so willing to share their knowledge and help a newbie. That help got me to the point where I made a few million credits and could upgrade my ship. BUT, sigh, can't give it a paint makeover or or put decals on it because you need ARX. It's true you don't need those things to play the game, but still... it feels disappointing that you MUST login and play every day and slowly accumulate ARX (400 a week or something?)

Yes, I saw that. But very slowly it seems. And I know you don't need the fluff and paint to play the game, but I think I just don't like the dopamine hit idea behind the ARX.
I'm by no means a defender of Arx and the concept in general, but we've all (well, most of us) grown used to it by now, and it does have its benefits compared to what we had before... at least now you can unlock paints without getting your wallet out. It just takes a bit of time and given this is part of Frontier's business model (microtransactions in the form of cosmetics as opposed to a sub) you can't really blame them for doing so.

It's just a way to contribute to server costs etc, whilst also making your ship look weird. The various cmdr clothes are quite good in VR, since you are stuck with this virtual body, nice to look down at my body and see combat trousers and heavy boots. The stock one is a bit like a gimp suit.

I bought something like 24,000 as a token donation, got a few raider packs that I don't really need, 99% of the expensive stuff is this -

First and foremost, you paid for a game. With in said game, you can if you wish purchase item's that you think would add to your personal enjoyment of the game. One can utilize cash to purchase Arx and or one can earn Arx by playing the game. Having purchased all my paint schemes prior to the implementation of ARX. Thus I've never needed to purchase ARX with real cash, since because I've managed to earn by just playing the game itself, well over a 100,000 Arx that though I'll never utilize, keep increasing.

If this is your first attempt at playing a sand box game, your previous mindset of an end game must be changed, or you will abandon ED eventually.

I like your point about a change of mindset being required. Sand box games are new for me, and I've not played one like this before. I'm not going to purchase ARX. At a rate of 400 a week, it could take a lot of hours to earn cosmetics which I feel should be part of the outfitting services of the game itself and should use in-game credits, and not something like ARX. Anyway, it's just my opinion and I'm too new at this game for that to count very much. I see that I've already logged about 65 hours on this game partly due to compulsory coronavirus lockdown and partly to see how long it might take to earn a few minor cosmetics. Time for a change of pace.

Do remember that just hours in-game doesn't earn any Arx at all. It's just playing it that gives em - eg. systems explored, stuff killed, trades etc.
So just play, have fun, pick em up as you go and buy the cosmetics when you've got enough. Some are pretty cheap.
