I honestly do not understand how you can relate a 2d sidescroller to a vast 3D MMO combat/trading/mining/exploring/everything simulator-RPG that is Elite.

Unless your post is a sarcastic dig at the depth of gameplay in Elite in which case I also have no response...

I love elite so no it wasn't a dig, it was an attempted light hearted post remembering a game from the era of original Elite which had planetary exploration

Haha excellent.

Well looking at it my hopes are:
Interesting planet ship to ship combat
Interesting planet driving experiences
Vehicle-Vehicle combat
Ship-Vehicle combat (dunno how dangerous that could be) maybe give the buggy a rocket launcher! :D
New scavenging/mining system
New exploration system, hopefully requiring a new module like "Ship laboratory" to analyse surface samples etc (Thinking of Kerbal Space Program here).
Hopefully some skill will be required in selecting a landing point, selecting a good surface rover and outfitting it depending on terrain and gravity etc
Hopefully different vehicle types (Bike/Jetbike/rover/jet-rover/tank-crawler type thing) - Think Star Wars crawler for that image.
Maybe an elemental effect like the rover cannot operate over 400 degrees so if landing on volcano planets you have to explore the "night" side and be back at ship before dawn (Chronicles of Riddick)
Maybe submarine vehicles in the future!

Lots of potential, can only wait and see. I hope they keep it technically interesting and not dumbed down to the Mass Effect 1 drive to point, press E, drive to next point :)
