Honestly wondering if I should bring back my "OFFICIAL Open Letter to FDev Poll hottest issues" mockery gag back. It was really popular during Horizons right after a major update. I know some people miss their FREE BACON!
To put it bluntly. Most the criticisms and attacks on Elite Dangerous I'm starting to see lately, have to do with Time.
More accurately. People believe their time is worth something. While this is indeed a healthy viewpoint, it can be said that the gamer's view of "worth" is often over inflated.
Case in point, the sheer ridiculousness of inflation in player driven markets. Markets where players can set their price on items and trade them for the virtual currency obtained in game. Here you can observe where very few players actually consider the factors involved in pricing an item to ether make the most amount of money possible (999,999,999,999,999 monies) or undercut each other to the point of devaluing the item making it worthless in their attempt to get their item listed first and sold so they get monies.
"This is a very fascination Adhock but do you have an actual point?"
Yes.
A lot of the more... shall we say... 'criticisms' of Elite (And I use quotations more to the inclusion of all criticism regardless of intent for non-ironic purposes.) lately have to do with Time and often the individual's perception of it's Worth.
The "Explotation" of Cash Cows and such in order to earn obscene amounts of credits in mere minutes.
Discussions of Elite "Wasting Your Time".
"I don't have time to play for years on end to get big and powerful ships or do X, Y, and Z because I have a life outside the game."
"Elite should offer Instant Ship/Pilot/Fleet/Wing transfer from one location to another with a push of a button and bypass all the empty space between the two you would travel normally."
"Elite should have Autopilot/mining/fighting/docking/trading/ect."
"I shouldn't have to spend time researching combat/trading/exploration/mining/FA-OFF/Engineers."
Basically people just don't "Have the Time" to invest in a game.
Now I get how the overall psychological mechanics of a game work. Perhaps the reason why all this seems so strange to me is because I long ago broke free of the mold. The mold being "Given Assignment A to move object B. Accomplish task, get reward, feel attagoodboy rush."
Or perhaps I twisted it to suit myself. Who knows?
What I find odd is that Elite Dangerous is a game. Entertainment. Something to whittle away the hours that I would otherwise spend unoccupied or occupied with something else.
Elite is something to spend Time on. Something that many people do in order to Kill Time.
So if people's time is so precious and valuable that Elite Dangerous is seen as so offensive that it "Wastes Time" I often wonder why people continue to play it.
Perhaps the usual trotted out line of "Oh you won't see the majority Adhock. They won't say anything because they'll just leave."
Fair point but then I have to ask why you are so committed to convincing those who still play it's a waste of their time. If it's a waste of your time, why are you still here?
I usually see people counter with "Oh I love the game. That's why I critique it the way I do."
So it's a Waste of Time and you lose nothing by just abandoning it but you're still invested in it that you continue to critique it?
Well which is it?
Is it a waste of time and you should find something better to do like you keep instructing others?
Or are you still invested enough that you are still willing to spend the time you insist is better spent elsewhere on Elite?
Perhaps I'll never get a clear answer seeing as how people like to sit on the fence. But in the wake of these dozens of topics insisting that Elite is a time waster yet people are still hanging around, it boggles my mind and I want to throw this out there to see who's actually willing to confront this flipfloppery of the self.
You can throw out all the reviews, positive and negative alike, arguments and counterpoints on why your criticism is valid.
But I want to know: "What keeps you here when you insist you'd rather be elsewhere?"
I am aware of the significance of the thread title. I chose it for a reason.
Time is a valuable thing that once lost can never be regained. So why when is it Wasted do you expend energy you insist is better spent elsewhere?
I'm probably going to get a lot instant responses that never take the time to reflect on the question I'm asking.
But hey. FREE BACON! is a thing right?
Alright. I've rambled long enough.
Discuss.
