Id really like to see this happen... Especially given the latest SDK statement. We are a good bunch in this sub forum and contribute as best we can to this great community. So how about it FDEV? Can we have our own little Q&A?

:)

Ok added my first ever poll! Lets see if we can at least generate some interest in making this happen!

Would be lovely :)

Yep - this would be great. Just some picture of where we're going and what we can expect would be fantastic.

Yes please, great request. Lot of love in this part of the forum, most people understand they are using BETA tech currently and things are not always perfect but we're all keen to see VR to continue to develop and grow as a major part of ED :-D

Voted yes... even a little update about FD's plans regarding VR in the next answers from the devs would be nice.

There are some things we need to know:
- Do they plan on supporting the CV1 on launch (or close to it)?
- Will they support other headsets like the Vive?
- Will they improve the quality of the experience? Like IPD setting being off compared to the other Rift games, or maybe improve things like the main menu or some other big interfaces that would be better curved or slightly redesigned for VR (a tiny menu in the top right of a giant flat screen isn't very user friendly).

Not many votes overnight... There must be a least a hundred regulars visit here. Doubt they will act if we cant show them numbers.

This game is kinda cutting edge for the VR community and sticks out as being by far the most immersive and downright impressive piece of VR software i've ever experienced.
It deserves to have continued support and to take advantage of every optimisation implemented in the newer Oculus software updates.

I know it's all additional work at FDEV but this game is the ambassador for VR gaming at the moment.

yes, please. I am very concerned about this comment.

"And to conclude this week’s update, Oculus are about to release of SDK 0.7 for the Oculus Rift which removes the ability to roll back to 0.5, so we wanted to make you all aware of some important information.

Players using Oculus Dev Kits should continue to use the 0.5. Oculus Runtime for Elite Dangerous. Upgrading to the upcoming 0.7 release will not be compatible with our game

As long-time supporters of VR and early adopters of Oculus, we remain in close communication with them as they work towards a production version of their SDK, but want to be open that without that SDK in hand, we cannot guarantee future compatibility. We will keep you posted."

just do as they suggest and don't upgrade your oculus runtime until they have had managed to rebuild using the latest SDK.
I would also suggest not upgrading the Nvidia drivers due next week that have VR support in them to be safe.

You'll only break ED if you go out your way to update the runtime.

sorry but I understand another think with tris comment. "we cannot guarantee future compatibility. We will keep you posted."

Offcourse at this moment is speculation from me, but I want a developer to explain it to us, because I understand another thing when I read that line.and yes I have seen this problem before in other games, also remain without oculus support.

IMO. I would not want to lose the only thing that makes this game different from the rest. Besides it makes me wonder what will happen to the cv1 and elite?

I think what they are trying to say 7x5. Is they can't guarantee future compatibility if you upgrade the oculus runtime.
They need the SDK from oculus before they can compile against the new runtime. If you don't upgrade to the latest runtime and leave everything as it is until they do their magic, there is no reason it will break.

I was out at Gamescom a week or so back and was invited to the private FD party. DB did a Q&A along with A couple of devs and they were asked about future VR support. The response was, they are committed to providing support and they alluded to the fact that oculus isn't the best kid on the block. I was left with the impression that Vive support is coming and that the Vive is drastically better. They didn't give anything away, you could tell they wanted to say something but were unable, I was staring at the front and all them of them looked pretty excited.

I went with not yet as cv1 is not out yet and they prolly cant say much about it if they do have access to them.
So yes would love to see but not quite yet, not until the v1 sdk has come out and there is a def date for cv1, they then will prolly be further into making it work with elite and have more to tell us.

I'm kinda with Slarty, I guess. Until whatever presumed top secret announcement gets into the public domain I guess that there is not much that they can say. However, I would like some disambiguation concerning their plans for VR for the next 9-12 months (i.e. before the consumer ready devices are available), so I voted yes just to get an opportunity to get some more info in the interim...

That was me asked the question ;)

I wonder about the (distant) future when it comes to VR and ED. I think that most people here would agree that the Rift has been marvellous for the experience of sitting in a cockpit and gaping in wonder at the universe.

When walking about in the more distant future comes along might the emphasis need to change a little? At the moment the static nature of a DK2 and HOTAS suit ED excellently. Might that change somehat as people [avatars] become more "mobile"? It would be interesting to hear the early ED thoughts on this topic.

This. I think FD will continue to support the OR past CV1, but are more focused on Vive right now. It would match up nicely with their work with Steam, etc. The question is why no word about it? It may simply be due to a deal with Steam. They may not be able to say much until units are up for preorder.

It was a great question. :)
They seemed pretty excited about VR to me. Did you get the same vibe about the Vive being better than the Oculus?

I'm inclined to agree.
