Ships Asp Explorer build question, and does hull thermal protects against stars?

Is is viable to run class 3A shields, instead of class 5, so I can get a class 5A fuel scoop(sigh all these useless class 3 slots, would've been nice to have another class 5 slot). With the Asp Explorer technically being a flying brick, I'm not sure if this will be viable or not(It's a pure explorer build, so I'm very unlikely to get in combat/attacked in it.

The Asp Explorer has absolutely no heat resistance sigh, so I'm wondering if I spend the 14m(god damn thing is expensive, it better protect against all forms of heat) for the hull upgrade, does it work against stars as well or is it a only laser thing?

I run tiny shields on my explorers to fit a bigger scoop. As far as I know, the reflective hull thing is only for lasers, not stars.

My tip, buy a Dolphin.

Ok cool thanks.

Oh well, guess I don't have to burn 14m then(talk about overpriced if it only protects against lasers, as It's weak to everything else, and gives a -1 ly jump penalty as well to boot)

Lol nah no thanks, I'm not trying to fly tourists around. If you're suggesting it for credit reasons, I think I'm doing fine as is on that front, I just made 9.2m going to witch head, and back.

No, the Dolphin makes an excellent explorer. It's what I use all the time. I can get it to jump around 50ly a go, plenty. Never over heats. Carries a spare fuel tank. Loads of slots for optionals including SRV, carries all exploring tools. Lands on a pinhead.

Oh oh, I'll take a look at it then(although I do like my Asp Explorer)

Save the size 5 slot for that sweet Guardian FSD Booster, and use 6A fuel scoop. :)

Oh damn, that FSD Booster is a size 5(see instead of giving the Asp Explorer all these useless class 3 slots, they should've given it another class 5 slot)

I'm currently using the class 6 slot for the beefy fuel tank. The default fuel tank is way too small, and a high ranking fuel scoop would be wasted on it anyway.

I beg to differ.
32t fuel tank is plenty, especially if you couple it with a beefy fuel scoop. You can keep the fuel level up very nicely just skimming the stars every / every other jump.
Oh, you can get smaller Guardian FSD Boosters (IIRC size 1 & 3 are available too), but the benefit will also be smaller.

Bah I plan on creating routes, few would dare, so I kind of need to rely on the fuel tank to get me through.

Yea but that defeats the purpose, It's all about that 10 ly boost :)

Dolphins do run a lot cooler though.

It's not a big deal, I never blewup due to it, just alittle annoying that's all(and a pit pathetic, that a cobra has no such issues lol).

I don't care much for the design, but what do the optional slots look like on it?

Planning to plough deep into those Brown Dwarf fields?
Economic route plotter will keep you going for a long time.
A compromise could be putting extra fuel to those class 3 slots...
And always keep mats for a few premium boosts, they'll get you out of tricky low fuel situations. :)

About the heat, power management and properly engineered class A power plant will keep it tolerable.

The Asp is pretty bad with an undersized shield, but with a Krait Phantom you can get nearly 60 LY jump range and nearly 1000mj shields.
In case you want to gank-proof your build.

I never even seen a station have a Phantom for sale, where do you even buy one. Also if It's like 47m+, wouldn't I just be better off waiting, until I can afford a Anaconda?

Not necessarily. I did my last big jaunt out in the black in a conda, but I'm currently in the process of engineering a Phantom for my next trip out. The conda will jump about 10 lys more, but it's slow, and to get it jumping that far I seriously undersized the power distributor and shields, which also kinda knackered my boost and left me reeling when I faceplanted a planet once. With the Phantom, I can already tell it's more fun to fly, faster, more agile, has a better view, will be easier to park, scoops just as fast and I don't feel like I've had to compromise on any armor or shields, whilst still carrying all the essential equipment I need.

The only downside is I lose about 10 lys. Cheaper too.
