Ship Builds & Load Outs ASP Explorer - Explorer/Trader Hybrid

Hi all.

I would very much appreciate your advice regarding my proposed setup.

I have just upgraded from a Hauler to an Asp Explorer and I have tried to put together a ship that will serve me for both trading and exploring

Ideally I want to to carry out the minimum of swapping components in/out when I venture out on longer exploration treks. For example, for a long trip outside of the bubble I would invest in an AFMU, but I wouldn't want to be swapping a high-class/high-rating AFMU for a cargo rack on a regular basis due to the high cost of the former.

The docking computer would be removed for long treks, but while trading it is something I want because I find docking dull and I also use that time to work out trades and trade routes. (I also have a 15-month old and the docking computer works well when they wake up unexpectedly!)

I have kept life support and power distributor to 4A and 4D, respectively. My shields are fairly standard, though I know many explorers go without.

I have incorporated the heat sink launcher as I find that the Asp can heat up quickly while scooping (probably my technique) and it will help to drop some heat in order to FSD back out of the system more quickly.

Any advice you can give me on refining the setup would be much appreciated. Thank you.

you can run your build with a 3A powerplant - this will keep your ship much cooler. also, if you don't fit weapons, a 4D powerdistributor will be enough for constant boost with 4 pips to ENG.

if you want to go exploring, change for a bigger fuelscoop. a 6D will scoop faster than your 3A and cost less. think about a 6B or (if you have the money) a 6A.

when you trade, i highly recommend chaff and shieldboosters on that build (i would even fit a small scb) - especially if you trade in open.

enjoy!

Heat generation when scooping is either your fuel scoop is too small (usually the problem) or your haven't found the flying sweet spot where the heat stays at 65-70 %. Try circling the sun either left or right at max speed versus top or bottom. Heat sinks are not needed. The A5 fuel scoop is perfect for the Asp scooping at up to a whopping 577/s especially on long excursions far away from the bubble. Too small a scoop like a 3A and you'll spend more time scooping than exploring. That gets old fast!

I just posted a rather detailed thread on this subject a few hours ago which may be of interest. Check it out at: Asp Wins...
