ASP Explorer vs Anaconda

So, I grinded and grinded since August and finally I made enough money to buy my (up until then at least) dream ship: The Anaconda. I also had cash to spare to outfit it with the best versions of the drives etc. At last I would have the (what I thought then) perfect exploration ship that I could fit with a hangar, hard points and everything I ever wanted since it has so many compartments. Plus I could hire an extra pilot to accompany me on the voyages in to the void.
Then I look at the jump range: Under 10ly  Well, fitting the A drive will certainly up the range: Under 20ly :eek::eek: Well, engineering will most definitely bring me up: After doing about ten rolls on the level five upgrade I couldn´t get more than 35ly... (my ASP has a min of 47ly). Then I started to strip down all the great new stuff in my compartments, even taking away my so sought after fighter-bay, but I still only landed on about 40 ly max???
I have seen the Anacondas on youtube that have 50-55ly and maybe you could get one of those lucky rolls, but my question is: Is it worth it? Because to get that kind of distance you need to strip down your ship and fly around in this giant empty ship with nothing more than some scanners...
Or is there any more advantages with the Anaconda in exploration that I have missed?

D rate the core internals except the FSD. D rated items are the lightest. You need to get the weight down. Also when rolling the G5 FSD a god roll would be low mass and 55% optimized mass.

But bringing along all the extra goodies will always add weight. Some of the people that go out into the void with a Conda dont bring weapons. Maybe a mining laser.

You don't want to fully A rate the ship if you want jump range. This is true for any ship, not just the 'conda.

If you're looking for jump range, you want a lightweight build like this ... https://eddp.co/u/4sW19CCf (62/65LY)
If you want to go heavy with fighter bay and all the amenities, you can still get to 60/62LY https://eddp.co/u/aZT3l8gY
By A rating it, I can get the jump range down to 32 https://eddp.co/u/QurwwVz7

What kind of a roll did you get on the FSD engineering?

Since you mentioned the Asp, for comparison, my Asp build looks like this https://eddp.co/u/6f84DoJY

35 ly is really good for a fully fitted Anaconda! I stripped down my exploration Anaconda, fitted a tiny shield, a SRV hangar and 55 ly jump range! :D

I don't have an Annaconda but I've seen many of them on videos and read about their awesome jump ranges. I know the Annie is great for the internals and can fit so many things in it but honestly, I don't know if I'll ever switch from my Asp Explorer.

One, I hate the view from the Annaconda that I see all the time. That hull view ick...
Two, I hate that the Annaconda can't land on small stations, I love knowing I can land anywhere if I need to especially in the frontier where a lot of the smaller stations exist.
Three, the view on the Asp is bar-none really. You can look down and actually see the ground and landing pad beneath you as you gently glide down. And also great for visual searching.

Just my two cents. :\

Engineering the sensors will help enormously. Until I started actually doing the rolls, I didn't realize how stupidly heavy the sensors are. Even D-rated, unengineered sensors are still 64 tons (or 160 tons for A-rated). With a "maximum" G5 roll on lightweight sensors, you can get an 80% reduction, for under 13 tons of sensor mass. That's a really good mass reduction for the ship.

The good news is that the Anaconda's hull mass is low, and so by low-massing everything else, the ship actually performs reasonably well even with reduced size thrusters. You can get by with 5D thrusters, and unlike most other ships, it isn't crippled by this while in an exploration configuration.

But as others have said, you'll want to start by D-rating most of your equipment, and engineering for lightweight where you can. If you want some ideas, here's my current exploraconda build (62.6 ly range fully fueled (2 ly less if adding a fighter bay), and set up for long duration flight, and so the extra AFMUs are just to take up space and ensure I don't need to synthesize refills if I don't want to).

The thing is, the Anaconda's OP jump range mostly comes not from its FSD, but from its incredibly low base hull weight. That's 400 T, whereas a Type 7 weighs 420 T, a Type 9 weighs 1000 T, and a Cutter tops it at 1100 T. However, the Anaconda has so much internal capacity (and large core modules, like sensors) that it's entirely possible to weigh it down a lot. In such cases, thanks to the FSD being class 6 "only", the jump range will drop sharply. You can see this in action in the FSD Profile graph on the Profiles tab on Coriolis. Compare the profiles of the Anaconda with its 400 T and class 6 FSD, to the Cutter's with its 1100 T and class 7 FSD.
So, if you want to get those dreamy jump ranges, you'll first and foremost need to save weight wherever possible. Getting very good rolls on your FSD will also help.

That being said, even when loaded down, the Anaconda will still outjump other ships, just not as sharply. For example, I did a comparison of an Anaconda and a Cutter having roughly the same defenses (armour, shield, and mobility - as much as the latter could get close), and then the Cutter jumped around 35 ly on a full tank, while the Anaconda did 45 ly. But on lighweight builds, it would be something like 40 ly vs 60+ ly.

Mine gets around 54 max, and it carries pretty much everything except weapons; 2 fighter bays, 2 SRVs, hull and fuel limpets, shields, mining laser, DD5 6A thrusters (Same performance as the 7As at this weight).
This isn't current or entirely accurate but it's close.
It has a hull repair limpet controller in one of the slots(It wasn't working on the site when I saved this.), and a Thargoid scanner.

My Asp Ex gets about the same but it handles *way* better in SC, has a much better view, but obviously can't carry as much.
This is pretty close but it only has preset rolls, not my actual engineering, so my actual range is a little higher.
I can set it up with fuel transfer instead and not lose much, maybe a couple ly.

Diamondback Explorer is currently the king of exploration. Asp and Anaconda are only needed if you need more than the basics, for example cargo bays and repair limpets.

P.S: Asp has the best cockpit view, mind you.

So what I can gather from all your comments is that I can get around 10-15ly more with my Anaconda, even with fighter bay and srv´s. But then I need a huge luck with all the different rolls (damn you Arsenic!!!).
What I also gathered is that the ASP will give a few ly less, no hangar bay, but a greater view, better handling and it can land on all landing pads...
I think I´ll stick with my ASP for now, until maybe a new, more exploration focused ship hits the market...

I've built an Asp Explorer up thats about 40ly jump capable. Hadn't paid attention to guides (stupid me) so A rated pretty much all the Core Internal components. As a number of them are now Engineered I'm loath to leave them out but the extra distance is tempting as I see a number of jumps (going up or down) are only possible with longer reach.

(edit above as I when I try and tip after url, text takes on URL look) note that the ship ingame is 39.51/39.45/42.97 and not 39.51/41.42/42.97 as reported by edshipyard. I assume its a bug in Elite
My Asp Explorer

This is why I'm conflicted on which one to use. The AspX has a way better view. But my conda does 60ly and Asp does 50ly.

To get the most out of the conda (and really any explorer build) you need light weight everything and good/decent engineering. Mine does 60ly with small shields and SRV. Pretty much all you need to go exploring. And no you don't need to shoot anything.

I really don't know if you need 60 LY jump range to reach anything in particular in the galaxy. I think the 50 LY year jump + 100% Jumponium will give you a 100 LY jump range which is I think more than enough to reach basically the furthest stars possible now in game anyway.

For a 10 LY difference, I'd probably take the Asp X. So much more maneuverable, especially since the Conda build isn't taking anything more than Asp X can carry anyway. If you were to take more internals in it then maybe the Conda would have more reason.

There are certainty places out of the reach of the Asp. Ascent and Decent are good examples. I still rather just use my Asp but I still have my exploraconda stored if I ever want to go there.

What's the furthest jump made in the game now? Meaning like to reach a place that can only be reached by that jump? What's the base jump range the ship needs to have to reach it?

Is 60 LY that record number now?
