How much better is the handling over D rates?

I've only ever used the lightweight option, and want to know how much I save before I purchase my next ship.

The speed alone is worthwhile just for the ability to effectively remove about a third of the ships in the game from the list of "Things That Might Kill Me When I'm Interdicted By It." For everything else you're too slow to outrun but tough enough (with pip management and good positional awareness) to survive long enough to high wake.
