Asp : Explorer

I've got my Asp pretty nicely equipped. Well, very nicely equipped. For just about everything I can I've 'A' rated the upgrades. I know many explorers wouldn't do that and would use lesser rated components to save on weight and increase jump range, but hey, I've done it anyway, and my jump range is still about 25ly.

My question is regarding the fuel scoop. At the moment I'm just using a 3A fuel scoop in one of the smaller compartments, but I've seen people saying that they prefer to use a larger slot for a bigger scoop...meaning they will use the size 6 compartment sacrificing the 64t cargo space. I notice the 6A fuel scoop is about 25 million credits, so I imagine many people wouldn't go as crazy as that. But how do the slightly lesser fuel scoops match up ?

For instance, would an A rated size 4 be better than a D rated size 5, and so on. I'm mainly considering speed of scooping, so are there any stats out there for how the other scoops rank/match up against each other ?

In practical terms, local trips in the Asp dont need a fuel scoop, as its 32ton tank is big enough for 8 or 10 jumps on the trot.

For long trips, it is often quicker to dock with a very close station and refuel rather than spend any time scooping.

As you can tell, I havent bought a scoop for my ship, prefering to use the free class 2 area for a scanner and a shield cell bank.

If you must buy a scoop, anything which scoops less than 40 or 50 gal intake is useless, and slow.

The only reason I'd get a scoop now is if I was doing a very long trek into space.

40 or 50? Those are for Sidewinder sized ships.

For an Asp you want something that scoops 300 minimum, preferably 500 units a second. It literally only takes seconds to refill the tank after every jump. If you are going on long journeys in an Asp, especially if you are exploring...then get a class 5 or 6 fuel scoop.

You might get away with a class 4 scoop, but you will need to test it. Anything less than 300 units a second really isn't worth the bother...

I've got an Asp very similarly specced as yours, and 90% of the stuff I do is exploring. The 3A fuel scoop is perfectly sufficient - just be opportunistic with your scooping. I jump into a system, scan the star, D-Scan the system, and while I'm doing that and also checking out the System view for planets worth scanning, I'm topping up my fuel. By the time the star has scanned, my fuel tank is topped up. So I'd say a larger fuel scoop is pretty much a waste of money unless you intend to allow your tank to run pretty much dry and then do one big scoop.

C6 is a great choice for deep space. Not too expensive (relatively) and does the job. It's what I'm using and I'm dumping 1/3 tank of fuel on some jumps. I've never exceeded 105% heat while scooping and usually don't hit 100%.
