Hey! I’ve been thinking about buying a new ship and I was wondering if anyone could post their experiences with the Asp Explorer? Much appreciated o7.

Great medium ship, good jump range, decent cargo capacity, a bit big for landing in rough terrain. I've never used it for combat or even equipped hardpoints; I fly it unarmed. It's one of the classic 1980s ships.
One of my favourite ships in ED. Fantastic dedicated explorer. I say dedicated because it’s still a fantastic explorer even if you load it up with modules and such. You don’t need to undersize the crap out of it like the Anaconda in order to turn it into an explorer.
I always find myself going back to it for one reason or another. It’s just one of those ships that you’ll always keep around.
I wish the game would introduce more such ships (hint: Imperial large class dedicated explorer)..

Thanks! These are actually some of the main factors I would like in a ship. What is the typical cargo size you would have had?
I was looking at the ship as it had Explorer in the name, and there are other ships like that but have been a bit rubbish. So I’m glad it’s true to it’s name. Thanks cmdr!
I'm struggling to remember, I think I had it about 50 tons for rares runs a couple of years ago. I haven't got a record of the build though.

Be warned "best explorer" is very subjective in fact the AspX it isn't,if you are short on money it may be a good option ,if you have good cash there are more (better) options,and for a real "budget and results" DBX is the best in town.
Plus, you can slap a gigantic fuel scoop on it (expensive though).

I am strapped for cash so I’ll probably go with this and once I’ve got more credits, I’ll look at other options. Have a safe flight cmdr!
TBH I can't stand the engine noise on the Asp X and having to fit a small class 3 shield so you can have a class 6 scoop doesn't win it any points either, for me the Krait Phantom works a lot better granted it's almost twice the cost of an exploration fitted Asp X but with the easy availability of in game credits it wouldn't take long to earn the additional cash.

I'm surprised no one mentioned supercruise handling. This thing flies in SC like a dream, and refuels much quicker than an Anaconda does. And pre-quardian engineering could get ~55Ly jumprange out of it. Plus as mentioned amazing cockpit view (in VR even more so, this canopy is HUUUGE).
To all those looking at the AspX as a (long range) explorer, also check out the Dolphin.
Yes, the AspX was the long time staple long range ship, and still is a backbone of the Fuel Rat's fleet, but with some modifications here and there, the Dolphin has ursurped the role as medium long range explorer.
AspX is still good if you don't have access to Engineers and Guardian goodies.
Oh - and don't use her for combat.

I mean that’s a huge +! Also key to exploring IS the views, so big cockpit screens are good!
