Asp ship kit

anyone care to share some screenshots to see if this kit can improve the cheese slice, or weather it looks like a Vauxhall corsa with 22" chrome spinners?

Thanks :)

Mmm, I've got it but I'm at work at the moment (lunch break, honest guv...)

There's a few nice parts in it - couple of good spoilers and some bumper parts which cover the area behind the sides of the cockpit. Don't have much use for the extraneous "wing" bits which just stick out the front and sides, but they might be to someone's taste.

I like mine :) - the flying squirrel look.

I bought the pack but I'm a couple of Klys out of occupied space on a long range passenger mission ATM.
Will experiment and post screenies when I get home next week.

I'm still on the fence as to whether or not I will buy it. I was really looking forward to the kit but I'm not entirely sure I like it now that it's out. I'd appreciate as many pictures from as many angles in as many colors as commanders can post here in this thread. Convince me to spend the money!!!!!

"Bright Star" in its usual modest getup (front bumper modifications and a small spoiler):

With wings, a different bumper and a different spoiler:

With heavy spoiler, different wings and a hinged bumper thing:

Looks way better without the kit imo.

This…is what I can’t decide: do I like the kit or not? Does the Asp look better with or without it? I’m just not sure the kit pieces actually improve the look of the ship. With other kits, like the Vulture especially, the kit definitely adds value to the look of the ship. But with the Asp’s kit, I can’t decide if I like it or not. There are 12 pieces in the kit, and I think I only really like about 3 of them, maybe 4? The Asp isn’t a great looking ship to begin with, maybe that’s part of the problem for me.

I wish, for such a popular and highly used ship, they would have done a better job with the ship kit. But then maybe it was just too hard of a job to make the Asp look good, LOL.

Bah, I still can’t decide if I want to buy this or not. The pictures have not convinced me yet.

Well, I think the Asp looks great. Contrary to popular opinion I also think it has character, more than most other ships. The kit simply doesn't fit though (or most parts at least).

I think ship kits need to be able to remove details that are already there. The two vertical fins on the ASP don't look good with a spoiler added on top of it. But if you had a bunch of different fin/spoiler variants that you could swap out instead of the default fins, the kit would be a lot more interesting in my opinion. Overall the Asp kit pieces seem pretty lackluster and I've not seen any combination of pieces that improves on the default design even a little bit. This seems to be the general trend for all the iconic wedge shaped ships so far. The cobra and sidewinder add-ons were also pretty tacky. The less iconic, less geometric/minimalist ship designs seem to benefit more from the ship pieces. Many of the variants of the eagle and vulture look fantastic. I don't know if this is because those ships are actually better suited to having kits, or if the devs are simply putting more work into those kits, or what.

It's not possible to remove existing part of a ship, for combat issues.

The vanilla ship shape has hitboxes, and those ASP's venilla fins have an hitbox too. these are places that, if hit, cause dmg to your ship.

Ships kit are purely cosmetic, so even if they make the ship look bigger, they are "trasparent" in the sense that hits and projectiles pass through the kits without generating any dmg. In fact if a ship kit gave the ship more hitboxes nobody would have bought them. So, for balance issues, you can't really remove hitboxes (like the vanilla fins) from a ship and substitute them with "transparent" fins that don't get hit.

ASP has big fins, they can't be removed, so they must design the kits in order to envelope those, thus spoilers are generally huge.

Regarding my tastes: I never liked the ASP looks and the kit is not improving my sensation. For the best of myself I cannot sell the ASP that I used to cross the Galaxy, but I find no more uses for it. Now it's parked stripped and not engineered, like a monument (of dubius taste).

You'll most likely hate me for this, but I find the ASP to be one of the ugliest ships in the game. It's got no proportion and that nose is simply...like they forgot to include the cockpit in the design and added it later. This is a real shame, as from the gameplay perspective, I absolutely love it. It is the best progression ship for most of the game's tasks.

Now, these kits...they are far from bringing an improvement in its design. I don't understand why FD insists in making ships look like cars. Both outside and inside. I'd rather have them look like...well...space ships.

In any case, while some of the other ships kits do look interesting, I can't bring myself to buy one. However, if they would show more love to the interior cockpit design, I'd probably buy such kits without any second thought.

Why would anyone hate you for that? Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, right? ;)

It's just that I think the Asp looks great from almost any angle. Whereas many ships other people find aesthetically pleasing, like the FDL or Python for example, I find hideous or think look only good from a certain angle.

Yep, my feelings exactly. I've spent probably 90% of my past two years flying the Asp, I love how the ship flies and how practical it is, I love the view out the front, I love her iconic sound, but I have never really liked how the ship looks. I mean I don't hate it, but I struggle to take screenshots of her often because I just can't find an angle that I like looking at.

I was hoping the ship kit would fix that dilemma, but it's only made it more pronounced, LOL.

In fact if a ship kit gave the ship more hitboxes nobody would have bought them.

The Asp is a very big target at the best of times! - but I would still buy ship kits if they changed the hitboxes, in fact, I'd prefer it if they did, just for consistency... but I can certainly see a situation where the crowd who think they're being clever exploiting this week's "meta" would, if any parts in ship kits subtracted anything from the hitbox, immediately all alter their 'Lances or Cutters or whatever they fly today to an identical slimline look. Yawn. :)

I've always liked the look of the Asp from the outside - it was one of my ships-of-choice in earlier versions of the game - but I'm not keen on the current industrial Lakon styling of the cockpit. I'd cheerfully pay through the nose for a Saud-Kruger refitted Asp Explorer. :)
