Ships ASP vs Diamond back explorer

The diamondback has better heat management than an Asp. It runs about 10-15% cooler on average, so even though it scoops slower, it can jump away sooner - often while still scooping inside the Corona. I haven't tried to optimize the speed jumping yet or done any timing experiments or analysis. I would guess the low heat % saves you about ~5 seconds when speed jumping which is similar to the amount of extra time you gave to spend scooping. The Asp is still much faster and easier to kit out for both defense and longevity without losing much range, whereas the DBE can only do one or the other and has to sacrifice jump range to do it.

My DBE is currently setup from testing in more of combat outfitting since I was testing it out, but I transitioned over to the Scout while doing PP stuff and found it worked better for me. Though, I am thinking about leaving inhabited space for a time if they have fixed the reported disconnects for for those that are further outside inhabited space, because I understood it the disconnects increased as people were further away. This is probably how I would consider outfitting a DBE for pure exploration:

I'd probably consider toggling the AFMU on and off as I decided was needed.

Jabber why not move shield to the class 3 slot, and get a class 4 AFMU for more repair? I think that point defense is basically dead weight. Missiles don't do anything to shields.

The diamondback has better heat management than an Asp.

That is interesting. Is that both of them? I want to do some tests now.

No specific reason. I've been toying the the build back and forth (I have it open in a tab and have been messing with it since I bought the ship) with the modules.

Thats an interesting thought and has me wondering just how much priority needs to be put on shields as well if going long range ? Should I just fit the lowest mass unit to increase range ?

Yes, I always run with a 3D shield (2D on light ships like adder). In fact, until 1.3 I didn't run with a shield at all. But now interdictions are more dangerous and persistent, so...

Since "Elite I", Asp is my favorite vessel and it remain my favorite vessel in "Elite Dangerous".

I like to have multiple possibilities with my ships so I use mine as exploration/smuggling vessel.
In case of long range exploration, I would replace chaffs launchers by more heat sinking and cargo space by fuel tank.
Even with 10% taxes, it would not cost me to much and I can find this modules at my home base.

Not able to do an equivalent with "Diamondback"

"Black Betty" (my Asp is stealth black) configuration

I've just taken my DBE on a 4000ly spin:-

Compared with the Asp, it's much easier to avoid overheating when scooping - I was able to orbit suns at 62‰ heat at Max scoop rate. You can FSD while scooping - that would fry my Asp...
I found that using standard D modules (except FSD!), I could also have a full weapons outfit and still keep >30 ly jump. The fuel tank also allows about 6 x 30 my jumps. I was supposed that using the economical route planner that I could travel > 700 my without refuelling.

The downside is that it really needs a larger scoop, the Asp can fit a 6 module, but the DBE is more limited.
By reducing the modules (eg weaponless), you can get as good a jump range as a stripped down Asp.

Next run out, I'll be using the DBE and keep the Asp for long range trading.

I'm trying to find a use for the DBE. Asp wins at pure exploration in my opinion with the class 6 scoop, so I've been playing around with the "armed explorer" concept.

For the same ~20M price the Asp same shields + extra shield cells and better damage output (and the better scoop).
Basically I can't see any advantage for the DBE over the Asp even in this scenario.
Only the bigger weapons could be helpful against Large size vessels. Oh wait ... can it be ... Thargoids??
