Assassination mission question.

Haven't done one for a while so thought I would have a look.
The mission deadline is 24 hours, the mission target signal source doesn't spawn in the 20 minute window at the indicated location, the mission is failed even though there is more than 23 hours remaining?
How does that work? Is it some kind of auto rep reducing mechanism?

No, the timing on these missions is a bit confusing.

You have a 'window of opportunity' to kill your target. That is actually from the time you take the mission until the 30 minute stated times end. The target will show before the start time, just not after the end time. The 24 hours is how long you have to hand in the mission.

It's unusual for the target not to show. You need to go to the planetary body given after the nav beacon scan, get pretty close, within the million meter range, and then just wait for the mission specific USS to spawn.

Ah, thanks, the 24 hour is now clear.
For me the target did not spawn at the location uploaded by scanning the system NAV. Went all round the indicated body at various speeds and ranges.
So it was half an hour with the only result being reduced rep with the mission giver. Not great gameplay.

It's pretty unusual for the target not to spawn at all...

As I said, get to within the million meter range then simply set supercruise speed to minimum and wait. It's not exciting... If it's a very large body or star, you don't even need to get that close.

On occasions, if I feel I'm waiting a long time I will reset the instance by dropping from SC and then low waking up again. It's also possible to find the target in SC and interdict them if you are into that. Personally I don't.

Anyway, sorry to hear it didn't work for you.

I've never had the target not spawn and I do these pretty much whenever I see them.

Did you try relogging or exiting then reentering supercruise, that can sometimes cause a stubborn mission USS to spawn?

I love these missions. I also figured out some time ago to always start my search on or near the dark side of whatever planet my mark is supposed to be at when I find out where they are.

I almost never find them sun-side, and I've never had a no-show. Of course, when I do take one of these, I head to where they're supposed to be without hesitation.

I really don't like those and how they work. You always see them 30 minutes in advance and I tend to forget them when doing something else in the meanwhile and then fail them.
Since all you need to do is fly to that Signal Source, I don't see the point of that time window. For me, it is not adding anything meaningful.

The time window is just fluff or possibly a relic from earlier incarnations of the mission i.e. when the target used to appear in supercruise during that window.

I am STILL having real trouble even finding Assassination missions to take.

Can someone tell me which combination of States / Government types they are most likely to spawn in?

I'm honestly not sure. You usually get plenty of deserters to hunt down in war states, but that's the only thing I'm sure of.

Raise your standing with factions, they'll turn up.

Boom states seem to produce more Assassinate: Pirate Lord
War/Civil-War states seem to produce more Assassinate: Deserter

Just curious, but has anybody had any of the other assassination targets recently? I've only seen Pirate Lords and Deserters since 2.1 I think.

Can you still get the terrorist and religious leader ones?

The assassinate a celebrity ones always cracked me up. Haven't seen one of those in a long time.

I had a touch, jumped to a system to locate my target. hit scan and of I went to location. at the same time I get message. I come for your cargo. cool I thought! it was my target :)
