Newcomer / Intro Assassination Missions

what - are these just bugged? I scan the nav beacon / use the discovery scanner. Sometimes that will reveal the target location, sometimes it seems to do nothing....and then I fly around all the system - sometimes I find them, sometimes not. Super annoying as the missions can end up wasting a lot of time.

Am I doing something wrong?

Nope - nav beacon or FSS to find mission SS. Sometimes instead you get a comms message from some random NPC asking you to follow their low wake and on doing that they tell you that the target has been seen in some other system.

They could also be bugged at the moment of course - just about everything has been royally screwed by these updates.

There are different types of assassination missions - and there are other kill missions which don't bear the word "assassination" in the mission title. And they're all different.

Well, not all, but there are
  • simple pirate kill: you get the body (or route) description when dropping into the system. If you drop in and scan the nav beacon, you get the USS directly. You can also hang out for a bit at the nav beacon and wait for the pirate to drop in, or they will often try to interdict you while you're flying out to the USS
  • complicated pirate kill: when you drop into the target system, you'll get a message that the bird has flown and you should look up a contact in a neighbouring system. Go there, wait for the contact to contact you, drop into their low wake, receive message with target system. Continue as above.
  • seen this one only for terrorist kills: scan a settlement data point to give you the target system. I prefer to switch ships between the scan and the kill - scanning is best done in a small ship, while my Viper doesn't pack the punch to kill a 'vette. Also, the scanning ship will often become wanted. Once you got the target system, proceed as above. The target may often be accompanied by their friends, and tends to run much sooner than a pirate lord (similar to some CZ special enemies), so ignore the followers and kill them quick - or at least disable their thrusters or FSD.
  • venerable admirals/generals/politicians/...: bad news. They're usually not too hard to find (scan the nav beacon), but they're not wanted by the current system, will call in system security (who then will shoot you), are often (always?) accompanied by a bodyguard (more clean ships that will shoot you) and fly surprisingly tough ships, probably equivalent to high CZ ships ("A venerable Admiral in a Viper? Easiest kill ever! I can do that in my Viper." ... 240 packhound missiles later: "ok, I'm out of ammo, down to 30% hull and have to evade those two security Anacondas. Time to run and get the big guns...")

If you don't get any reasonable info from the nav beacon, it might be a good idea to check your comms panel and the (hopefully updated) mission description on the left HUD. You may have received (and overlooked) a message that your pirate is in another castle system.
