Assault SRV.

Why we do not have a few types of SRV's now is beyond me but I'm almost at the point of giving up on expecting anything such as awesome gameplay from Elite anymore... They killed multicrew in many ways on it's release as well...

However, back on your main topic... Yep, assault SRV would be awesome to have and use when going after High Security bases and the like. But, until they actually make things come to life in game I don't see them doing anything other than saying "there needs to be game play blah blah blah" to excuse it all...

It's mentioned by me and others for the past few days (probably much longer too) that a variety of ground vehicles would be awesome. I've seen calls for ones with larger cargo capacity and my favourite is the assault version (space tank). I know the problem is to do with the bay doors only being so big but the SRV is quite spidery anyway. Compact a few things here and there, maybe make these different types slower for balance.

Also like said above, multicrew. Can't understand why you can carry two SRVs but not multicrew it currently and now you've got me picturing multicrew in one assault vehicle (space tank). It'd actually be quite good having someone on the turret while I drive/visa versa.

Damn it, just give me my space tank will you... please. :p

Here's a couple of ideas that should really show up before "new" SRVs...

A) Turret mode: Straight ahead fixed or gimbal / Target only / Fire at will

You know, kinda like what's on the ships already...

B) Imperial version, with the imperial seat from inside your imperial ship...

Seemed kinda like a no brainer issue to look at first, no?

:S wait you think that it's more urgent to get an imperial seat in a cockpit so small that you could barely see it, than my space tank.

well I'm happy if your happy eh.

Well, it kinda seemed like that black transition screen was covering up the part where your ship seat slides down into the SRV on rails or something cos, otherwise how does the magic pockets material storage go with you?

Except that, if you're in an imperial ship the seat auto-magically transforms into a federation one? How's that work?

What about this bit though? Think, shoot skimmers automatically, while running away! :D

Or your buddy shooting skimmers as you run away with a large cannon. oh and it could be tracked and oh be all incased in metal with quite small viewing ports. Basically a tank. I just really want a space tank.

Look we've got Fed and Imp fighters so I'm all up for Fed and Imp space tanks. One could be cold and practical and the other flancy and shiny.

Okay, I'm back with figures.

So I'm not quite sure how big the SRV bay door is but the SRV takes up most of it and it's dimensions are as follows:

L 4.8m
W 4m
H 2.5m

After a quick google search, I've found that many smaller armoured (not quite tanks) but still tracked with a big gun on top vehicles are actually smaller than that. So the size isn't the issue. These real life vehicles can seat 2 maybe even 3 people so I'm not seeing why a multicrewed space tank isn't a possibility.

To flush out my idea above a bit more. The fed one could have a larger armament/ more hull but less shields and slower. The imp one could have a smaller armament/ less hull but a bigger shield and faster. Any takers on that?

I would like to see a mining rig SRV, some thing like this

I hear the call for a cargo/mining SRV more than I do for a space tank unfortunately but at this point I'll take anything that isn't a scarab. So the problem with a cargo/mining SRV is that the Scarab takes up the whole of a class 2 bay and the whole of the bay door. So we can assume they are of equal size and since a class 2 bay can only carry 4 tons of cargo, it's a big call for a vehicle that fits in the same space to carry anymore than that. In fact it makes sense that the scarab only carries 2 tons since you also need space for wheels, a cockpit and a turret.

So the only suggestion I could make is for this mining/cargo SRV to expand once deployed similar to how the front wheels do on the scarab. Perhaps the rear end could have a canvas type material that expands once you've cleared the bay to make the vehicle much longer than it previously was. Perhaps have a smaller turret (maybe just one barrel instead of two). The cockpit could be more squished in to so the view isn't as wide like the large globe type thing we have now. Just some thoughts but it certainly couldn't be the same size as a scarab.

The space tank would obviously just do away with the cargo completely in favour of a large turret and second seat. The cockpit would obviously be much more enclosed too because it's a tank.
