Assign crew to ship transfers for reduced cost/travel time

A nice two birds one stone possibility here,

People are constantly complaining about ship transfers. Crew fail to justify their upkeep when their only application is SLFs. This would be a slight alleviation of the one and add some much needed value to the other.

What happens if you want to switch crew? You have one going to Colonia while you're waiting for them. But you can't use them because they are transferring your ship. There should also a chance they can be destroyed.

Good point, you probably don't want to put your expensive ship in the hands of a rookie NPC you just employed and send him towards Colonia, with the expectation that nothing can go wrong. Maybe not ship destruction, but a high repair bill on arrival and the journey taking twice as long could deter from this practice.
This reminds me of the Fleet missions in NMS, your NPC crew make reports of events that happen along the way. The ships can be lost as well I think, but only if you do not react with reports of major issues coming in.

You'll just have to think ahead about when you might want to have your crew available. Devs usually like it when their mechanics require some foresight or consideration, so I'm sure they'll view this as a plus. It might even be incentive to keep more than one crew, assuming Elite rank crew are decently better for transferring than an Expert you can hire anywhere.

Then I think how they have it now is just fine. I rather have frontier add great content that caters to another bad short cut idea. Unless there a REAL risk to the crew and ship being destroyed. Without a benefit of Insurance. Because you are not flying that ship.

NPCs are available in the crew lounge anywhere anytime, they are never actually with you. That's why they die when you die . . .

It would be nice to give NPC crew something to do. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think they are only useful if you have a ship with a hangar bay and too few players have one and maybe even less use it.

Tying a mechanic that's taking up space to a mechanic that could directly benefit from it? That's the kind of common sense this game needs. NPC's already don't pull their weight; let's put the faffers to work!
