Asteroid base questions

I have an asteroid belt and apparently the only thing that you can build there is an asteroid station. I'm pretty sure that you have ship yards and outfitting available in them, but do you have other services, what products are sold in them? Does it have a bartender?

One thing that I don't like is the amount of of materials need is the same as a coriolis station if I remember correctly... Which makes no sense. After all the shell of the station is provided by the asteroid itself.

Hello, this was my asteroid base that i completed yesterday evening, "was" because now its not my system anymore.
Hope the screenshots help. It has 15000 people on it.

Didnt even know what you mean, im a new player.
The place looks under construction, scafolds everywhere, probably need to wait for weekly reset, only the apex shuttle lady is available right now, see screenshots.
Also please mods give me back my system! :))))

Okay, the last time I docked at one was before Odyssey, so I wasn't sure. As soon as I get my support services going I'll add that. I really would love to have a station where I can store ships when I get ready to build an orbis.

An Asteroid base is a fully fledged Starport, it has the same concourse and facilities as a regular starport anywhere else, I have never been to one that doesn't.

After all the shell of the station is provided by the asteroid itself.

Yeah that's arguable, if you look up actual real life proposal for space habitats inside Asteroids most of them suggest the shell is actually only there for protections against rocks, cosmic rays, radiation and other dangers to be found in ye space realms and is not suitable for structural purposes, also due to the nature of asteroids you would need to line all interior spaces with a shell because they are agglomerations of rock and gravel mostly, so they would leak atmosphere like a sieve, basically you are building a full starbase inside a gravel pit so everything needed to make a coriolis habitable is also needed inside an asteroid.

The argument here is you wouldn't build a coriolis inside a ring or belt because all it would take is small stray asteroid to do some serious damage, but building inside an asteroid provides protection against such eventualities, even if it takes the same amount of materials.

I don't know much about this of course but wouldn't it also require an absolutely massive amount of energy to hollow out an asteroid? I've seen people building a swimming pool and it was an enormous job.

Depends, if it's a gravel Asteroid not much really because it's mainly loose stuff, how you would go about doing it is the question. Drilling is easy using those big hole borers things they use to make post holes only giant sized you could make a quick start but once you started getting hollows it would cause issues because no gravity, but really I don't think energy is the issue, I mean we can jump between stars, got plenty of energy, it's how to apply it without blowing it to little bits of rubble. I mean one proposal is use giant mirror, turn the entire thing into molten rock and injecting something to blow it up like a balloon, might take a while to cool down though. Of course the nickel iron ones, melt it with lasers, use magnetic fields to pull out the molten stuff as you go off you go.

I used to be a member of the L5 Society when that was still a thing, people have put a lot of thought into this sort of stuff, of course they are now part of the NSS and there's a huge library of reading available;

Does anyone else actually prefer the empty stations without the NPC's or is it just me? I'd love to be able to build a Private station or ground base where access could be retricted.

You can mine the asteroid, if it has the right materials, and use that to build the starbase or at least part of it.

While that's true, we do have magic refineries in our ship that produce 100% pure materials out of the raw stuff, building a fully functioning refinery next an Asteroid in zero gravity maybe harder than it seems in game. Given the almost unlimited power we have at out disposal it might actually be cheaper to just attach thrusters to the asteroid and send it off to a refinery elsewhere then ship the finished product back.
