I feel like the current asteroid bases might be a little much for individual players to own. They're basically just like all of the other Coriolis or Orbis stations, but with a different skin. Don't take it wrong, I'd LOVE to have one, but it seems far fetched.
When I close my eyes and think about my "Home" I want a base primarily as a place to park my ships, store modules, maybe store commodities, etc. I could achieve this with a relatively small surface settlement. I could be satisfied with a single large landing pad, as long as the game would allow my iEagle to land on it. Repair, restock, and all types of storage would be the "must haves".
I happen to think that player owned structures should be extremely difficult to get. 10Bcr, King/Admiral, maybe have to bring in some materials/commodities to get it up and running/keep it up and running? But it should be a real achievement to get one.
It would be neat to be able to buy optional structures, such as maybe an SRV race course, additional landing pads, etc. So that I could host my friends at my base.
I do not want a base that I have to constantly defend. I want the freedom to travel the galaxy as I always have, knowing that my base will be safe when I get back. This makes sense with Elite since none of the other bases/stations/cap ships can actually be damaged. I personally would not want minor factions in my personal base. I would not want a market that people could mess with, or lockdown, or anything else like that. I think when I first buy the base only I should be able to land there. Once I have upgraded it to host my friends then only people on my friends list should be able to land there? Something like that.
Anyway... Those are just my ideas. Hopefully FD does something like this down the road. I certainly don't want E

to turn into a clone of Eve, but I think there are ways we could own structures without having it build up huge infrastructure like that.
