Asteroid Shape/Size/Color and Laser Mining

Commanders,

We know that for core mining, the size and shape of the asteroid determines the type and quantity of the contents, but is the same true for laser mining, or is that purely an RNG mechanic?

I was out mining Painite the other night and thought I had started to spot a trend. I then mined again last night and started to spot the exact same trend as the night previous.

What I noticed regarding Painite laser mining, is the asteroids were of roughtly medium size, elliptical in shape, with streaks/bands of red/brown color. I also noticed that more often than not, they were also the asteroids not rotating, or hardly rotating.

Has anyone documented these characteristics for laser mining, and was anything found?

Laser mining is any prospected roid fired at and returning a big yield hehe.. no pattern as such. Shapes wise. Although methods of finding em are about I just randomly pick on the slower ones. For ease of mining.
Could be changed though it's been a while since l mined.

Core mining - shape and size of the asteroid dont denote whats in it or the quantity for that matter, the shape, certainly can denote a core, this is because FDev were lazy when rendering asteroids which can blow up.

but whats in it? well depends if you have eaten a banana between 14:09 and 14:14 on a Tuesday in the northern hemisphere while holding a toilet brush in the other hand and standing on one foot while sacrificing your first born on the alter of Braben, but more often than not its methalate clagnuts, not the LTD or VO your looking for.

I can confirm what the others are saying here. Laser mining is my primary activity in this game and for all the time that I have spent mining, I have found absolutely no pattern with regards to shape, size, or color vs whether or not there is decent Painite in the asteroid. Just don't ignore the tiny asteroids. Sometimes they have ridiculous amounts of Painite in them. I've found tiny ones with close to 60 percent Painite.

Thanks for spilling my morning coffee

I'm pretty sure if there was a pattern, an usable one, it would surface by now. Especially from mapped mining pros.

This.

Let's face it, we've got people who've made the effort to map entire hotspots so they can optimise their mining.
With that level of OCD at work, any patterns are going to be recognised pretty quickly.

Always thought it was a shame that ED couldn't manage to, at least, make the "veins" in 'roids different colours depending on what ore is in them so it'd be possible to locate 'roids by sight.
I dunno.
Maybe RNGesus decides what sort of 'roid you've found on the fly, so it doesn't get chance to talk to the graphics engine. 🤷‍♂️
