Asteroids improvements in rings

I've really enjoyed flying around the very tightly placed asteroid rings whilst doing the CG in LFT recently. The close proximity of the ice asteroids is great and makes for really good dog fighting.

Could we improve it further by adding drifting asteroids that impact and break apart. At the moment everything is just stationary and rotating. It would be great to have large flying asteroids impacting on each other and maybe create debris, smaller asteroids that break apart or break off.

Mixed feelings about that idea. Would add something welcome to bounty farming in RES sites but could be a real pain for mining in rings.

I'm sure it would be possible, if ED was single-player only.
But in group/Open, every debris position and movement would have to be synchonized between all clients.
Can't see that happen in the near future.

Maybe you could tag stable and unstable ring systems. Similar to different types of res sites. Yeah, maybe the sync would be a nightmare...shame !

I don't think that would be possible on a technical level. There's a reason all the asteroids are static, if they were all moving and reacting in accordance with physics the game would be very intensive to run. It would be awesome, but, it's just not technologically feasible. There's also, as pointed out before me, the consideration of synchronizing it all for the online modes too.

The only place this could perhaps work are the small rocky belts you can find in systems. The ones with maybe 10-30 rocks floating in them. A lot less resource intensive in that case but hardly worth the effort to make them move since they wouldn't add to anything.

Again, it would be awesome... but... just not going to happen in Elite Dangerous.

In a single player game it might have been possible. However that's just too much data to need to send to another player.

Never going to happen.

how dynamic are early protoplanetary disks? It'd be cool if some of the brown dwarfs we could visit were protostars still enshrouded by early planetary disks.

It's actually not a lot of data to track, only initial collision vector and speed, physics are taken care of client side.

But probably not worth it, I'm thinking collisions probably rarely happen in real life rings anyway, but not sure.

Yeah, exactly.
I can only speak for myself, but I for one am happy ED runs on my xbox, as well as my not-all-that-powerful laptop.      like that would make the game much more complicated than it needs to be for such a small thing.
