asteroids that are 99.9% as bright as a motherlode should yield more than 0.1% of the value

Why do asteroids containing nothing but a couple of water deposits show up as brightly as motherlodes on the pulse wave scanner? This is silly. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack using a scanner that makes some of the hay look like needles. It's feast or famine. You either find a motherlode worth a ton of money, or you find nothing that's worth the space it would take up in your cargo hold. I feel bad for whoever developed the sub-surface mining tool. FDev might as well have just thrown their work in the trash. I would like to try sub-surface mining, but I haven't found a single sub-surface deposit that was worth the space it would occupy in my cargo hold. When you prospect an asteroid that looks as bright as a motherlode on the pulse wave scanner, it should at least have some kind of consolation prize that would be worth the time it would take to collect it.

I'm sure there will be balance passes on rewards for deep core mining. FDev always do this when they introduce new mechanics although usually the rewards are deemed "too much" and are dialled back whereas in this case, if what you say is true and you're not "missing something", they seem to have gone in the opposite direction.

Either way I'm pretty sure they'll look at it if it's brought to their attention.

While I agree that bright rocks should have good yields, even if they don't have cores, I think you're being a bit harsh.

There are lots and lots of players who don't read the forums or reddit, and for those players they are having to figure out on their own how to identify the good rocks, making it more of a treasure hunt.

That fact that some of us learned how to identify the right ones off the bat (due to modeling) doesn't mean that FD intended for us to come home with hundreds of millions in our cargo holds.

Frankly, I think they underestimated us. And, Frankly, I think that their "working as intended" is a christmas gift to both them and us, i.e. we're happy and get to make cash, they're happy and get to go on vacation. It will probably be balanced down when the new year hits.

I've noticed that the brightest yellow asteroids are either mineable, or are spheroid in shape. If they're spheroids, I'll save my time and give them a pass since they never seem to have a core. Plus, you can usually tell if they're roundish in shape from a long way out so you don't have to spend any time traveling to them.

I’ve only been mining for the last couple of days, but in my experience so far the motherlode rocks tend to be a really bright, deep orange rather than bright yellow, and also share a similar shape (medium sized, kind of gnarled). I’m finding them frequently, and can more or less identify them by sight. :)

Nothing new there then, seems four years on FDev still designs stuff for morons.

But is he being harsh? if motherlodes and "almost but not quite motherlodes" look the same, can you blame him and others who may not voice their opinion but otherwise think it's more than a little confusing? I think this comes under "we value your time (not) (TM)".

The scanner is SUPPOSED to differentiate - if FDev want less motherlode hauls the way to balance it IS NOT make them look the same but to reduce the proc rate the BGS creates them.

I don't think this is an Xmas present at all - it's another example of "we didn't test it and were sloppy".

False positives aren't good for anyone, in a game or anywhere - that's just a rule of life people should remember and take steps to avoid creating them.

Alternatively they could add a module that increases the resolution or something while asteroid scanning to get a more accurate read - either way it needs altering.

Been mining for a week and noticed the best are the non round yellowish green glow asteroids. If it’s get orange in it I pass.

Hey OP I noticed the ones with water are bright too. This gives the game some challenge. Not all will be valuable imo it’s better. Also look for the ones with a hint of bright green in them and scan them up close. If they lose their brightness it’s a fail if it stays super bright it’s gonna have either water in it or asteroid fissures
