Astronomy / Space Astronomy and Spaceflight Enthusiast Discussion Thread

Hello,
I thought this would be a fun thing for us ED players who also happen to love and be interested in real life space and space travel. We could discuss news and ideas here, along with how the game represents our galaxy. I'll start off.
How about SpaceX's auto landing boosters designed to be fully reusable? Imagine the cost decreases if that becomes a fully realized thing. Perhaps NASA will speed up its testing schedule for the orion program (which is dismally slow) if they can launch for cheaper?
Here's a link to the animation of how this will work if it gets pulled off successfully.

Not really, no. We end up with everyone bumping their pet threads and endless messages saying "BUMP". So please don't do it.

I've moved this to the Astronomy Forum
Well, thanks. I don't bump my posts more than once because of the fact, but I guess I won't do it at all anymore.

Be interesting to see what happens.

Not too impressed with the notion of reusable technology to be honest. But from an engineering point of view those units are flawed by the number of boosters and the incorporation of movable parts. Anything mechanically movable is bound to fail. Parachutes may look passée, but they work. As for the boosters, they will need fuel which would be better used for the lift off.

But time will tell. Looking forward to seeing the results.
