Hardware & Technical Asus GTX 970 issues - anyone else with same card? CTD etc...

Hi All,

I've recently installed a new Asus Strix 970 4Gb card in my machine. I was getting a consistent 100+ fps with Vsync off across 3 monitors (2x DVI, 1 DP <> DVI adapter) until ED crashed tonight, and now I can't get more than 14 fps anywhere in the application.

Anyone else seen a similar issue? I'm aware of the memory issue on 970s, but the card is only using 1.5Gb memory at any one time.

Does anyone else get the same? I've only just got it so I can RMA it if need be (although Dabs are usually unwilling to refund a warranty item), however the goods are not as described (i.e. they dont' blooming work) so I should get that through without issue.

Anyone else running an Asus GTX 970 Strix and having issues?

Cheers,
S.

That sounds really abnormal, I've the exact same card and it's been rock solid since I bought it.

That is strange, but I would troubleshoot to make sure it isn't software related. Uninstall/reinstall drivers. Have you recently downloaded in nVidia drivers? I know there was a new one released last week for the Titan. If so, I would uninstall those, and revert back to a previous version and see if the same thing happens.

I would also test out other games that are GPU bottle necked, and see if you get a slow down in frame rate. If it is defective hardware, the problem should occur on multiple software platforms. If it only happens while playing Elite:Dangerous, than it could just be communication between the two (eg:Game install, Driver install, other software running hogging GPU resource, etc).

Previous card? Did you do a complete clean uninstall/install of fresh drivers?

Previous card was a 7990, and a 660 before that - clean uninstall/reinstall each time. Might have to RMA it :(

Crashes when I try and log into windows - that has to be either hardware or driver related - I'm not even running any games!

(Doesn't seem to be Elite related, so I'll move this to Hardware).

Well seeing as you went from AMD to Nvidia you might want to run a program like DDU to make sure all the leftover AMD bits are surely cleaned out. I do have to ask why a 970 when you had a much more powerful card in the 7990?

Try to boot in safe mode and look for anything nvidia related in the event log. Once you are in safe mode you could try to uninstall the driver aswell.

Little bit OT, for which I apologise....

What performs better - two 970s in SLI or a single 980?

I've got a single 780Ti at the minute and I'm aiming to go the 4K route in the not too distant future but can't go SLI as my particular card is now discontinued (I've seen some refurbished ones on eBay but I'd prefer to buy new gear).

What's the heat like on the card? The strix 970's have an issue where only 2 out of the 3 heatpipes connecting the heat sink to the chips make contact.

I have exactly the same card also and have no problems running ED at fully spec with an old 2500k on an Asus P8Z68-V board.
Have you tried a driver sweeper prog to totally remove the ATI drivers and then do a fresh install of just the driver and PhysX?
Other than that, I would try reseating the card, otherwise RMA.

On mine, the fan never comes on till approx. 65degs, so rebooting to desktop should offer no stress whatsoever to a 970 Strix, I do monitor my temps with MSI afterburner, but not my fps.

Good luck!!

Don't jump to conclusions! You mentioned this happened after E:D crashed and that everything worked fine up to that point. The very first thing you should do then is to make sure the crash did not corrupt any files in the E:D install. It could be that simple. Verify Game files with launcher and test the card with other games.

Also check Geforce experience and if it has loaded "Optimized Settings" for Elite: Dangerous. Turn that off because I am 99% sure it does not work with a multi-monitor setup. Depending on your preferences, Geforce experience may apply these optimized settings automatically with a driver update.

As others have pointed out, using a driver cleaner can be a good idea. Especially if you had an AMD card before, but always smart when changing cards.

Personally I use the tool from guru3d.com: http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

When you uninstall and clean old drivers, and when installing new drivers, use only 1 monitor with native resolution until you are completely done. Test the game with a single monitor first with default graphics settings, then hook up the others.
