at last, a game that teaches you something!

yea i know there are many games that do teach you things, but with this game its a little more obvious that you are learning.

the game is Rocksmith 2014, and it teaches you to play guitar!

all you have to do is plug your guitar into a spare usb slot via the proprietary cable and off you go!

yup, you heard that right - the game uses a REAL guitar, none of this plastic rubbish you get with games like rockband, with this you get real world experience of playing an instrument, not some plastic buttonfest made to look like the real thing.

pick your fav song from the list of 50 (many more available via DLC from steam at a couple of pounds each), set your experience level, tune up and you're good to go!

to start with you only have to play a small portion of the notes of each track, but as you get better the game increases in difficulty by adding more notes until before long you're playing along to the whole thing.

there is a lot not to like about the game, the main one for a lot of people is the proprietary cable that's required. this makes buying the game as a digital download a bit of a waste of time as it won't work without the cable, but the program does support both left and right handed players, lead guitar, rhythm and bass.

it even has a 2 player mode but to use this you have to buy a second cable (as well as have a second guitar) stand alone the cables are around £25 each

session mode, riff repeater, lessons - it has them all and is available on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC

its worth noting that the guitar cable works across all platforms so if you have an xbox copy and your friend has a PC/PS3 copy you can still enjoy 2 player on any of the 3 systems)

at £43 for a physical copy of the game with cable (price based on PC version - not including guitar) it won't break the bank and you can use any guitar with a standard 1/4 inch jack input.

so, if you have ever wanted to learn to play the guitar now is your chance!

Guitar

I was using GuitarBots, https://guitarbots.com/ about a month before Xmas after being given a guitar to fix! I thought it was a brilliant way to learn, even using it as a treat after first doing some physics homework! Since Xmas how ever i haven't picked the guitar up. Now currently decorating at home and using ED as the treat!

looks good but for me has one big problem - no support for left handed players as far as i can see :(

Hi Andy,
I just googled it and apparently they have a left hand mode

and its free!

just had a look, unfortunately its a half job as a lot of it is still right handed :(

but the really annoying part is i couldn't get it working with my Alesis iO2, i had to use my rocksmith cable to get it to work!

still, it has one big advantage in that it runs on XP meaning i won't have to boot up my monster of a games PC to play.

EDIT: and it isn't quite free, once you get past the basics its $15 a month ($6.70 if you sign up for a full year)

and wow is it annoying you have to use the mouse so often, so far i've messed up every challenge as when they start i'm too busy picking up the guitar after being forced to put it down to make one mouse click :( (my PC is not exactly in a guitar friendly position in my room)

I have the PC version to. Bit lazy to learn so I bought it. For my Mexican Fender bass guitar.
My bro and dad got guitars. So could use them to.

I love Rocksmith - it's a heap of fun!

However - I wouldn't say it's a great way of learning. It basically teaches you to be a walking CD player, it teaches you nothing by way of creating music.

It's still nice though.

while true that there isn't much of a creative side to it, you can't create music on a guitar if you can't play the guitar to begin with. it's not the be all and end all of learning guitar but its a good way to start.

Got a Upgrade Fender deluxe. So did play few songs. But I' am beginner.
However there are only a few songs I like so bought some DLC to.
Rocksmith 2014 replaces Rocksmith. If you got both on PC also the import tool. Then part of rocksmith and some DLC also avaible in Rocksmith 2014.

So I both a few dozen DLC and play a lot more songs.

Also it offers mater mode. Which is for gitar masters.
Also there is some jam mode where the PC follow your music.

so there is also room for creativity.

Up til now I mostly have done trying the songs.
