Ships At what minimum loadout does the Vulture beat a Viper?

I'm just at the threshold of having enough money to sell the Viper and get a Vulture. Will my mostly-A Viper (below) be as effective as a Vulture with size 3 burst lasers, or will the Vulture only be better with size 3 beam lasers?

The Vulture with class 3 pulse lasers will beat the Viper hands down. You don't need bursts or beams.

Until recently, I ran with:

[Vulture]
L: 3D/F Pulse Laser
L: 3D/F Pulse Laser
U: 0I Chaff Launcher
U: 0D Kill Warrant Scanner
U: 0D Shield Booster
U: 0D Shield Booster
BH: 1I Lightweight Alloy
RB: 4A Power Plant
TM: 5A Thrusters
FH: 4A Frame Shift Drive
EC: 3D Life Support
PC: 5A Power Distributor
SS: 4C Sensors
FS: 3C Fuel Tank (Capacity: 8)
5: 5A Shield Generator
4: 4A Shield Cell Bank
2: 2A Fuel Scoop
1: 1D Hull Reinforcement Package
1: 1D Hull Reinforcement Package

It was a (very expensive at ~20mcr) combat all-rounder, but it was impossible to lose when RES farming. I just upgraded to the Fer de Lance. In terms of combat, I actually prefer the Vulture, even though power management is a headache.

Should be enough to beat a Viper...

:D

The Vulture with class 3 pulse lasers will beat the Viper hands down. You don't need bursts or beams.

This is very good advice. I run a single class 3 pulse laser with the biggest class 3 cannon I can find. For anything smaller than a Cobra, I just use the single laser. I've often thought of swapping out the cannon for another laser, but I tend to attack everything and wonder how long I'd have to hang out to take down an anaconda with just 2 pulse lasers.

I have experimented with using an Asp as a bounty hunter, but I don't recommend it. I've off a faction in the system I'm currently hunting in, and now they jump me in force when they find me. In the vulture, I would end up fighting for a while then bugging out because they would chip away at me. I thought the additional hardpoints on the Asp might be handy to put turrent weapons on to fire at my attackers while I just chase down one of them. This doesn't work very well because the turrets don't differentiate between someone you've scanned or someone that is shooting at you. So if you HAVEN'T scanned someone that's shooting at you, and you open fire on them, you get a bounty. SO you have to mode the turrets to the "Target Only" mode and you're actually worse off now since the turret weapons are nerfed. Also, turrets seem to not fire when you feel they should, they have a mind of their own. I played with the configuration of the Asp for some time and ended up determining that it's much faster to dispatch the onslaught of Sidewinders, vipers, adders and sometimes cobras with the vulture.

Many times, I can kill vipers in a single face to face closing attack. They're facing me, around 2km out, I scan, and open fire, In the time it takes for us to pass each other, I can have hit them enough times with the laser and the cannon to have them blow up behind me as I'm turning to get on their tail. I think they have to have no shield in order for that to work, but I do it a lot.

I've had dual C3 Pulses on my Clipper for quite some time and I think you'd be surprised at how well it goes through armor and munches on subsystems !

Pretty much agree with everyone here. An almost stock Vulture (need to upgrade to L3 Pulses) can wipeout any Viper. Sink a little over a million into it, and you can pretty much RES hunt all day.

Sorry, I worded my question poorly. I didn't mean beat a Viper one-on-one in a fight, I meant be more combat effective. Like, would my mostly-A Viper be more combat effective than a mostly-stock Vulture? (I solder the Viper and have a mostly-stock Vulture now anyway!)

I'd say yes, with the L3 Pulses. Be mindful of your insurance, but look for the lower upgrades right off, once you get to the higher power distributors, you can literally fire constantly. I RES'd in my Vulture stock w/the L3 Pulses for a good while, and pretty much took out anything with ease (except an Anaconda, and a well stocked Python) solo. The bigger vessels, I waited a bit for Security assistance.

Once you get a Vulture, the Viper goes in the trash can.

Hey now, don't be hate'n... Just kidding.

I like to collect motorcycles in RL, so I've taken to collecting old ships. Even thinking about buying one custom paint job per ship (although they need something cool for Vultures), and having a private collection. Well as soon as I find a desirable home base that is (waiting for 1.3 to hit before I decide that).

The vulture should be able to wreck the anacondas solo. Especially if you have a rated.
2 c3 pulses
2 chaff
2 e shield booster
a power
a thrusters
e life support
a fsd
b sensors
a power distributor
5a shield
4b scb (not used in pve)
2a fuel scoop
whatever on the last two.

All you really need to beat any ship are C3 pulse lasers.

Which is why I really hope the two new ships will have at least one well placed large hardpoint.

Yes - only drawback ( esp in pvp ) is its low speed and therefore getaway chances.
