Atkins hub is driving me crazier than I already am.

Not an absolute newb, but yeah, I kind of am. Played the simulations for nearly 40 hours (had to keep stopping and coming back to them due to busy life and work schedule) to get a hang of the controls. Been piloting around trading for the most part - gotten used to the FSD, Super Cruise, Landing, Missions, etc. I have 3 missions that are transporting 3 pieces of data to Atkins Hub. I figured out how to land and take off on a planetary body (my ship DOES have the planetary assist module). However, I can never seem to end up any where near Atkins Hub.

The FSD drops out at the planet (Dromi 3A I believe) and it shows Atkins hub on my screen - at least kind of sort of. So, I descend to where my ship is guiding me, but it ends up being like 5.2 Mm away from where I actually need to be. Ascend back up, try again. Same problem. I can't seem to get anywhere near it.

I included a screenshot of the planet map incase it would help. If I am reading this correctly, it appears to be constantly putting me on the direct opposite side of the planet of where Atkins Hub actually is. I have climbed back up to about 100km above the surface, and attempted to fly to the other side. No go. At full throttle (about 215km/s on my space whale - ADDER) the distance doesn't seem to change at all. If I leave the planet or even the entire system, then try to make my approach again, I'm literally back to where I started. I might abandon these 3 missions if this keeps up.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance :)

Are you coming in at too steep an angle? You need to come in at about 45 degrees (roughly) so as not to be going down too quickly.

If you get this bit right you will activate glide mode which will allow you to glide for a couple of hundred km. Once you get good at this you can usually come out of glide right on top of the station.

Sounds like you're on the opposite side of the planet to Atkins. If Atkins is showing as a dashed circle you need to circle around the planet in SC before descending, at around 45 degrees as mentioned.

At full throttle (about 215km/s on my space whale - ADDER) the distance doesn't seem to change at all.
This sounds like you're in normal space - you want to re-enter SC if you want to travel around the planet.

Lots of video guides to landing on planets on you tube.

Pics of you in cruise would be more helpful. We can't see where you actually are from the planet map. We only know where you think you are.

You're on the wrong side of the planet by the looks. If the target reticle is spotted brown instead of solid yellow, it's on the other side.

In that picture, blue arrow is where you are on the right, and base is on the left.

Ah, the curse of the round planets...

Pesky little things rotating and all that so places we want to get to are between them and us...

It's a planet, like, a real sized planet, not a toy like in some other space games. It's 2,951klms in radius, and you are flying meters per second not kilometers per second, even if you could fly directly there through the planet it would take you around an hour. If you want to cover distance near a planet you need to jump in Supercruise and reduce your angle of climb to around 7% to get anywhere, but if it's on the other side of the planet better off climbing out of gravity well just above orbital cruise height and flying around the planet at around quarter or half throttle until you get near your target.

I had looked at that video (actually, that was how I learned to properly land on the planets surface). I'll go through it again on Saturday. Maybe I'm coming in too hot as was first suggested. I do get into Orbital cruise but it doesn't seem to stay long before jumping straight into Glide so maybe that is it. I also wasn't aware that the grey dashed circle was indicating it was on the other side <face desk> and now everything seems to make so much more sense like the light of the world has finally been turned on or that the universe has finally acknowledged Gouda as the perfect cheese.

Thanks again for the tips everyone! I'm going to give it another go this weekend (time permitted).
Much appreciated!

When in planetary orbit, and you want to cover distance, look for the blue zone on your altitude meter. This allows a faster speed than glide.

Stay in it till you have a solid reticle in your HUD. Then you can go into glide.
