Atmospheric Flight

With ships being able to carry SRV's, surely there is now the possibility of adding aircraft for atmospheric flight too.. please

Are the spaceships not just aircraft with less lift and bigger engines?

Although I would like to leave the ship in orbit and use a drop-ship style SRV or ARV (Air recon vehicle) that can take samples, explore etc and return to orbit. Like a short range lab vehicle...

No, not in the slightest. The ships in Elite have about as much lift producing capability as a brick (even the Eagle) They would rely on brute force thrust vectoring in atmospheres.

Turn off your engines on re-entry the ship becomes a drop ship then.
