Atmospheric landings, life?

As has been said a few times there are loads of hurdles to jump over to do it 'right' For sure NMS proved we can have it now, but the big things lacking (from a space sim pov) from NMS are graphics fidelity, consistency and realism.

All these things not only take a tremendous amount of compute power (both CPU and GPU) they also take an awful load of design work to look 'right'

Now probably today's Pascal Titan X and 1080's could do a lot of the gfx work but that would set the bar of entry so high it would restrict sales. So basically even if it can be implemented using todays high end tech you'd need to wait until today's high end is tomorrow's mid range(i.e going on current trends in about 2 years time)

There's also the gameplay elements. You'd want so many other systems in place to maximise the gameplay experience. For example
multi-crew
Avatar creation/customisation
Walking around/1st person
Better chat and socialisation tools
Ideally VR support
Stuff to shoot at/do when landed.

To name but a few

So yeah, not expecting it for at good 2-3 years

Restrict sales? I already bought Horizons with the impression that later worlds would be included upon completion. I will probably buy all the seasons upon release. However landing on Earth like worlds will be behind another pay wall?

What?

They explicitly said earthlikes was not in the scope of Horizons a million times.

It will be in another season for sure but will they be available to Horizons owners? Probably.

I think they'll include the previous season in the bundle they'll be selling every season though so season 3 will, as a pass, include all the content Horizons has. It wouldn't make too much sense selling a season pass after the season is over.

We'll see though. The same concept created too much confusion the last time.

Restrict sales in that the hardware requirements to play the game could be so high as to render it out of reach for all but the enthusiast.

E.g If being able to land on and explore earth like planets needs 2 1080's in SLI and 32gb of memory the amount they are going to sell will obviously be reduced.

Therefore even IF they could technically do it now, they wouldn't for the above reason. Better to do other stuff and let the technology catch up.

I would suspect that yes, planetary landings on atmospheric and earthlike worlds will be another (paid for) season.

FD will have to run, is SC comes to light officially next year, they come with everything, planetary landing including atmospheric, FPS, space walk, planetary walk, multicrew, and all that have ED and more. They is a say in my country, "those of ahead do not go far, if those of back run well"

This is also a major concern of mine. What if E:D gets outpaced too quickly and doesn't get to create what it needed to in time? E:D is hands down better than SC in terms of the systems in place already, however other people don't see that. I see that potential and am going to be buying Horizons no matter what to help fuel season 3. Why? Because I want a universe to live in, not just explore. I want a planet with life, an ocean with life. I want to explore a universe on the planet (yes, planets are that big). I want to look up at the sky from my cove and just realize that no one may ever find me here unless I told them where I was... that's how big it is, that's how real it is. That's what I want and that's why I support E:D, because they're not sellouts. SC is a mess, it really is. Where do you get off putting a single player campaign with what is supposedly a full blown sandbox MMO? Do you know how much resources are wasted in making that half-done thing?

They invest in NPC's like it's some 5 hour campaign when they could have focused on giving players the tools to build THEIR OWN outposts and be their own characters. I know the direction SC is going in and I don't like it. I know the direction Frontier is going in and I LOVE IT. That's why I want to see this happen, and soon hopefully. Just progress, baby steps are fine with me! I don't mind.
