Atmospheric Landings - please make them challenging and "sim like" :)

+1, duly repped.

I'd love for atmospheric landings to be challenging, and a bit scary. The idea that a safe landing can depend on piloting skill, and that if you screw up you could suffer severe shield and hull damage from burning up during re-entry, is really appealing. I would love to feel that sense of 'Phew! Made it!' after having piloted my ship down during a really wild storm on a hi-G world.

Assuming the weather's dynamic, weather reports could be added to station bulletins too. :)

This was mentioned in another thread and it's probably the most cogent comment on the potential for planetary landings I've seen (unfortunately I can't find the OP on it):

Because this game is cross-platform (PC, Xbox, PS4) any planetary landings will be defined and/or limited by accommodating cross platform tech.

In other words whatever happens will have to accommodate console tech. High end PC tech will still kill consoles for graphics but the cross-platform thing will create significant technical restrictions on what planetary landings may (or may not) be or will do (if they happen at all).

Yeah unfortunately they will have to design this for the lowest common denominator of control options. Which, depending on how you look at it, is keyboard and mouse for the PC and gamepad for the consoles. Sadly that means the landings will never be as complicated as the HOTAS crowd would like - imagine having to carefully apply yaw and thrusters through the whole landing process to counter the effects of the atmosphere :)

With respect I think the cross-platform architecture(s) will restrict the mechanics on the basis of graphics processing power. Also VR has resolution limitations.

Remember that whatever is procedurally generated has to run across multiple platforms with some graphical rendering limitations.

o7!

bump
they really need to focus on the major core game mechanics such as planetary landing for at least all non life bearing worlds by now.

it's actually not that difficult if they really put their minds to it
it doesn't have to be every type of planet either
they could start with completely barren dry worlds like Mars
and even then it would be WIP just like with horizons
I don't get what's taking them so long to be honest
for me being able to land on any planet is number one feature that is missing from this game!
