I would like the atmospheric planets to be a little more alive, such as lightening, strong winds, methane rain etc.

Atmospheric planets are, at this time, only planets with thin atmospheres.
Those type of atmospheres don't support the weather phenomena that you are proposing.
We are going to have to wait for planets with more earth-like atmospheres.

I think what you just suggested is achievable in the near future.
There are now more important aspects to be pursued, such as making the galaxy alive .... with sentient alien forms
