So I was hanging around a nav point when I got attacked by a clean NPC. I'm clean, I'm not pledged to a faction and neither was the NPC. It was firing away at me giving it all the usual "I'm going to boil you up" etc for no apparent reason. My only choice was to leave. It's not a big deal because I could just boost away and let it chase me but nobody else could attack it either because it was clean. I was just curious as to what was going on. Anyone else had this happen?

Umm did you happen to kill his wingman or something? I find that sometime, one NPC will be wanted in a Wing, shoot him and the rest of the Wing naturally want to extract revenge. And unless you have 'Report Crimes Against Me' turn on, they won't become Wanted even if they hit you. Of course all you have to do is SC out of the Nav Beacon, do a 180 and re-enter, resetting the instant.
Yes that's the only thing I could think of, except I do have report crimes against me switched on (unless an update has switched it off by default and I haven't noticed) - so I don't understand why he didn't become wanted.

Remember the NPC has to actually hit you, near misses don't count
He definitely hit me quite a bit. As I could easily outrun him I hung around and let him catch back up and attack me again a few times to double check what was happening.

No, it was Eravate. Other commanders were there and verified that he was clean and attacking me.
