Horizons Attacking bases - virtually impossible???!?

Hi gents

I'm trying to infiltrata Kirk Base (listed as low security, ++) for a scan mission. The base has 2 big ship defence turrets and several small anti ship and anti vehicle turrets.

I have a Fer-de-lance equipped with 6A shields, 5x shield boosters, a shield cell bank and heatsink. 4x 2B dumbfire missle racks and a 4A pulse laser.
My plan was to hit the big turrets first with the dumbfire missiles, then the smaller ones and then take out the anti vehicle ones before the ship turrets respawn. But even when I hit the large turrets with several 4x dumbfire salvos + lasers, they do not blow up. The smaller ones do but take several missile hits. I can't do anything because the defenses blow my shields up so quick I can't even use the shield cell bank in time. I can't destroy a single large turret before they kill me. Not to mention the security ships coming in to circle the base every couple of minutes...

Any ideas what I can do? As it seems, either I'm doing something horribly wrong or the base attack missions are totally flawed.

So I tried to attack with the SRV only. The small anti vehicle turrets are no problem because they shoot at a shorter range than the SRV turrets but when I attacked the skimmers, all of a sudden one of the large anti ship turrets fired at me too. Maybe a stray shot hit it, whatever. SRV ammo ran out before I could take out all skimmers. This is so annoying!

Hey there Houndmux, what you are doing used to work in the old days but FD had to buff it as we were finishing these missions in 10 seconds flat. (So blame us old players)
What FD want you to do now is have a longer adventure by landing in your ship, 3km away is safe, and going in with your SRV. They are actually better and more fun missions now.
You can rearm your SRV with synthesis,
hope that helps.

So I know now whom to blame that one cannot perform a peaceful fly-by above settlements anymore (and -imo - for completely broken settlement's game mechanics with all those "patches" FD has produced to cut down "simple" grinding solutions) ;)

some hints that can be useful:
1)SRV can be rearmed (already mentioned)
2) "BIG" anti-ship cannon can target SRV and return fire if occasionally touched (with no more as one shot usually), looks like it loses ground targets really fast
3) in some cases turrets, cannons and skimmers can be temporally (for a short amount of time) disabled by damaging particular generators and/or accessing/hacking special terminals.

Oh, you old players owe me a beer!
Thanks for the info that SRVs can be rearmed. The method is not really straigthforward you must admit, but thanks to rearming and refuelling I could take out some turrets and skimmers and finish the mission. Bloody ships shot my nice SRV to bits when I tried to run back to the ship but it was fun anyway.

With all last changes I can't understand the reason of spamming the mission board with such missions. They become a sort of - try once and forget. Does anybody is taking them playing BGS or Powerplay? Too much time consuming.

I remember reading that all you had to do was use your SRV to head-butt the settlement power-gen until it blew up - apparently that didn't make you wanted as you hadn't fired your guns. Has that changed or was it just a shaggy-dog story?

Hmmm, the question was about "scan" missions, however I like that approach (haven't tried it yet). After 3.x update many of settlement types became non-accessible not only in a ship, but in a srv also. Imo it's a shame that while incapable to fix "missions" side of the game FD start to "fix" in-game features rendering them inaccessible and somewhere obsolete.

Apparently out of modesty, djadjok did not indicate his research on the settlements. It is in Russian, and at least quite a decent time has passed, but it is still relevant.

We do them for the BGS as they are fun and pay around 1 million. But then we do not max/min our game play as we just have fun and love driving around on a planet screaming as we get shot at.

Most scan mission simply involve ignoring the defenses, getting within 50m with your ship, performing the scan, then quickly leaving.

The only time things should be tricky is if the mission is bugged and cannot be completed, or if you want to get all datapoints.

I did appreciate what the mission was but since the OP was trying to neutralise the defences my post referred to a method of neutralising defences without actually coming under fire. As I say, it is just something I remember reading, I have no idea if it works or ever did work since I have never tried it.

Those "rumors" were right.
Tested and approved. You can destroy a settlement generator by ramming without alerting defenses (outside of the restricted area). Also, the same rules applies to turrets (just tested on L2L layout). Thanks!
Note - haven't tested if this counts for mission completion conditions. Supposedly - yes.

After doing a fair bit of exploration and trading etc, i thought i would try my hand at a few other mission types, aka "Novice" rated base scans - how hard could that be?
Attacked the base with my new FDL, shields engineered to max, pulse lasers to G3, plasma acc and basically got my handed to me. I flew away a couple of times to regen, then back and eventually blew up the goliath (~30 minutes it took), however I had to fly away again to let the shields regen one last time. Imagine my surprise when a respawned one was awaiting me.
Not to mention that In between, I did try going in with an srv, yeah that went well also - I logged out in a huff after that pasting.
I didn't realise that the way to do it is to take a pounding and get the data from 50m as per the post above (thanks), so may try that once I get over my embarrassment of being bested by what is effectively a large skimmer, and his missile tower pals.

I've been doing these to help with Turning the Wheel. It's 4 pips to systems, nose dive straight for the data point and give it a big kiss while scanning it (data link scanner on your ship) and then boost away lol. You don't even need an SRV unless you're in a small ship or in a ship with paper shields.
