Your case, sounds like Scouts departing from the Titan. They will be making a beeline for the inner edge of the asteroid field and you might’ve been right in that path as they were leaving. That does not mean they are aggrod to you.

As for whether they require direct line of sight, I’m not sure.

The incoming streams of fire as soon as they got in-range strongly suggested they were aggro'd

I could actually see ships departing the Titan from where I was lurking. They'd leave the area and generate the little black clouds and escape. So, I could see that going on where I was lurking as well. These exiting ships, were still quite some distance from me, I could not see them on the scanner, but could see them visually.
