Attempting to understand graphical settings

Hi folks,

I'm trying to understand graphical settings using Valve Index. For example, when I set to default I see a funny graphical "glitch" when I use the menus. It's sort of like when I hover over a menu with the mouse it glitches but then fixes itself in the blink of an eye.

It seems related to the settings, because I thought I had found a setting that made that glitch go away. But now I cannot make it go away again. I thought it was the super sampling but I have both in-game and SteamVR set to 100% (no SS) but it's still showing the glitch.

So first question is: does anybody else notice this glitch of the menus?

2nd question is easier. When I reset SteamVR "Video" page back to defaults, the Refresh Rate (80, 90, 120, 144) does not show anything. In other words, my question is: What is the default Refresh Rate if I set back to defaults?

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Well I have no understanding of why this works but I guess I have solved it temporarily.

What I did was set the in-game SS to 1.0 and then set the SteamVR "Zoom" (which I think means the same thing) to 200%. I also set the SteamVR Refresh Rate to 90.

Again I don't understand why this works at all but the graphical glitches seem to be gone. I have no idea how the game will play or look, I have only tested the menus.

Well so far the game looks and plays "OK" (I can never tell much difference). The GPU is 85C and the "junction temp" is 105C. I guess that's okay? I have never understood what's a good temp or not.

I guess I will go shoot some pirates.

This glitch happens when steamVR is interpolating a frame because your framerate drops below those required by the headset. The only way to remove it is to either turn off the interpolation in steamVR (I wouldn't suggest it) or lowering your settings until you don't lose any more frames. Or live with it, if it only happens in certain situations (this is what I do, I need those Ultra shadows, sorry.) It also happens in some ships with the proximity warning lights, they seem to physically pulse instead of only the light pulsing, and is also visible in some other situations.

Someone else will have to answer this, my Index is still not here.

Yeah I figured what I was seeing was like out of one eye but not the other. It was strange like that. But then when I closed one eye it still happened, so I have no idea.

I found out that if I disable the "motion smoothing" it seems to help a little. I am not so certain if it's a coincidence or not.

Don't worry time will fly and that thing gets there before you know it.

Motion smoothing is the frame interpolation setting called now - so turning it off should remove the artifacts, but it will add stutter (since it only activates when you don't reach the target FPS), which can make you dizzy and nauseated in VR and may cause headache.

Concerning my index - 4 weeks (or more), after ordering it on the 9th of March with 8 weeks ... at least it is now counting down, was stuck at 8 weeks for ... 16 weeks or so?
