Attention GTX970 owners ...

I've got two machines with 970's and neither one suffers. Mainly because I think 4k screens are a passing fad and not worth investing in them.

4k isnt a fad, its fast becoming the next standard.

And for those with 970, I would honestly advise a refund and replacement of the card. While the memory "issues" may not affect you, it is never good to have a card that is "compromised" by the maker. Any other Nvidia card that doesnt have this 3.5gb/0.5gb memory layout would suffice.

No, they really aren't. 4k screens with connectivity and FRCs that only allow very poor temporal resolution (resulting in the temporal/spatial "dynamic resolution" being poor) certainly are, though.

4k is current tech. I've been involved with shooting and broadcasting live 4k, ain't no thang as the production chain is already evolving to support it. However, even NHK are pushing the frame rates at ever higher spatial resolutions*, meanwhile standards bodies are working towards unifying standards for extended dynamic range for domestic displays. If you think 4k is a passing fad, you're in for a nasty shock.

* If you've ever watch Super HiVision try to do a panning shot, you'd understand why :D

From what I've read, you'll only really see any sort of problem if you're SLI linking two graphics and running a 4k setup at Ultra level for games in the high-intensity GFX region.
Otherwise, you'll hardly even notice anything is wrong. :)

just so you know, this is due to the memory allocation nvidia choose to implement.

you might not see an issue for now unless you ue 4K monitors, but should you play a game requiring the use of the full memory, which will momst likely happen in a more or less near future, you will encounter the issue.

tho by then, you might not be able to get a replacement / refund.

not to say you should get refund, but at least consider this issue is a design issue and even if you don't see it because of the usage you have right know, the issue is still there and might pop up sooner or later. :)

I agree that 4k isn't a fad. People said HD was a fad and 1080 is now the standard.

Regarding the 970 refund, I basically can't be bothered. I can understand why people might want a refund but I will be ok.

because of false advertising / hidden design flaw, which by law is open refund for customer "abused" by it.
hence why a class action is opened in the US.

while i won't say GO GET A REFUND ASAP, i think ther is enought reasons that a customer wanting a refund on this basis should obtain it no question asked.

I learned that buying into tech early is expensive an generally not worth it. I bought an HD TV years before HD content was readily available and was due for an update soon after it was. I figure I will be due for a gfx upgrade by the time 4k is mainstream enough to make buying into it worth it. I will gladly take a partial refund from Nvidia for the false advertising though....
