Attention n0Obs

Good on the OP for his offer, I'm sure there's some players that would appreciate the help. Someone really should think about starting up a group for this sort of thing. Reaper keeps telling me ingame that we should start up an old farts group, that would be a good start I think, I'll see about him and I putting together a proposal here on the forums abou that...

I'd offer to aid in your pursuits but I'm in a cutter and im still trying to turn around..

There is a trick to turning in a Cutter, it's simple and easy to do...

Sit and wait for the planets to move in their orbits until your target is lined up and then go!

A friend of mine and I took a more direct route with some newbies in the LHS starter around Eravate. We interdicted most players we could find and then proceeded to try and get their opinion of the game so far, see if they needed help with anything or if they would like to make some quick money, shadowing us in a Hazardous RES or something.

Most ran. A few fought, or tried to fight as much as you can with a sidewinder against twin FDLs using prismatic shields, though we didn't fight back. Just waited. Surprisingly enough, only one person disconnected on us. Most were quite nice and took what limited advice we could offer before we went about our business.

People are really not social in this game @_@

A suggestion - if you want to put a bit more effort into that: start a group/guild of 'good guys'. Perhaps organized (ok, that's probably the wrong word here...) along the lines of the Fuel Rats. We have player pirates, griefers and worse scum - why not a players guild of watchmen or bodyguards?

I was doing this earlier. Lol alone mind you, and in my super weird DBS instead of my FDL. Wasn't much use. But I was watching for players stalking other players and warning them.
But I NEVER attack a player, without reason, unless they have a bounty, in a RES and I didn't notice it was a player.
I'll also never 'trick' someone in to winging up with me so I can kill them or anything.
I do what I can to help noobs get out of the sidey and crappy mission grinding.

Last 2 people I helped I got from a sidey to a decent spec DBS / Cobra in less than an hour... Although I never see either of them online anymore... Lol

Regardless of how much help you offer, the fact remains that newbs just want to go out the do their own thing and learn in their own way. If they are now with a solid gamer such as yourself, they are kind of locked in to actually doing something and listening to your directives, now matter how solid they are. This in a way limits their freedom to just go out and fail over and over and get anywhere of relevance. Sound about right?

As Deadspin stated above, when I help n00bs in starter space, I don't give them a choice. :) I interdict them and tell them to comply...or run. I won't shoot at them, but I tell them what I just did (interdiction) and how vulnerable they are (as a n00b). I sell them on the idea that they need help and then drop a couple of tons of gold for them so they can practice using the cargo scoop and the commodities market. So far, it has worked about 80% of the time and in the end, they usually get a good kick out of the whole process once I explain that I'm not a threat. Plus they get protection from my friend and me during those moments they are running scoop drills (a lot of them didn't even know there was a cargo scoop. Takes a lot of patience to walk them through the whole lot but the excitement they get when they sell the stuff to the station is worth it).

One guy thought I was pirating him. I was flying my Conda. He was in a Sidey. Seriously?

Depends on how you look at it. Some people get frustrated failing over and over. Others really appreciate the experience of your assistance. It reminds them that they don't have to fear every single person but it is ok to be cautious. I was naive when I started and was lured into a couple of traps. That made me leary of anyone who ever spoke to me afterward, but since I've made some great wingmates. One of which forked over 10 million (palladium) to help me on my quest to Python. I was super excited during the first drop. Then I realized I didn't have collectors. "D'oh!" I'd never used them before so I had a lesson on how to utilize 3 at once and it was awesome.

Alternately, assuming current theories hold regarding the shape of the universe (i.e. space is curved)... if you continue in a straight line you'll eventually end up where you began. So no need to turn that cutter. Make a slight course adjustment then keep going straight... and have a BIG fuel scoop and lots of extra reading material.

Ok, let me put this the other way round: I am (quite) new, and neither I nor my ship are combat oriented. When reading up on ED in the forums here, I read a lot about people who hang around newbie areas or popular trade spots, shooting up other players for the lulz. So, so far, I'm staying in solo or Mobius (although, at the place I'm at the moment, that doesn't make any difference). When I get interdicted by an NPC, I submit and high-wake.

My problem here is that all my credits are bound in my ship and my cargo (when trading/missions) or exploration data. One mistake (ok, three ATM), and I'm back to square one (i.e. a Sidey). When I get some more credits so I can actually afford making a few mistakes (and perhaps try my hand at PvP), I might take you (or someone else) up on that offer. At the moment - too much risk.

Imagine me, coming back to the bubble with several weeks (or months) worth of exploration data on my ship. I take you up on the offer and ask you to shadow me, when I enter the bubble, to a convenient port where I could sell that data. But it turns out that you just want some target practice (and honestly, that's all what my ship and I are currently good for in combat). If I get interdicted by an NPC, I can usually run. But I have very little time for that, so not really a chance to start a conversation. If I let a fully equipped Cutter/Corvette or similar heavy come up to close range, I'll probably explode before I even manage to hit the thrusters. An exploration ship has _weak_ shields (if at all).

To the OP of this thread...feel free to add my signature...its my ingame...to the postor of this response...add some of the folks on this thread...when you do log to open...you will see little green ships in your galaxy map if any of us you add are on...most of us are ok with being added to a list so when we are in open we are willing to lend a hand...depending on how far you are from us...or if we are aligned with opposite power...glad to help a mate when ya flying thru unfriendly space lol....yes there are those that for whatever reason pick on new guys/gals....there are plenty of us out here that outnumber those types...we can be a huge resource to new players...may not give free money but we do tend to give lessons free, some do give free money if they are rich enough...there are plenty of good souls ...the more you make friends...the more of those types you will see.

Peace and prosperity by any means!!!

Thanks for the replies chaps, I'll add you all tommorow
I'm not being charitable, I should point out. I spent last week ganking traders in the gateway system
But that was mostly because Edmund Mahon's stupid fat face annoys me

Ive done everything else, so let's see what winging up is like

I think your offer is very kind....but..
You don't rally people or call them up by calling them N00bs, nobody likes that.
This in a way shows your own superior position to them : not needed, they know that.
If you want to help beginners, just go out and do it, advertise on TS channels you are willing thats all.
Doing it here is just a stunt.
Comprendre , me amigo ?

Cheers

and a happy New Year to everyone
