Audio makes all the difference

I really like the look and feel of this segment from Call of Duty Infinite Warfare, a great use of audio and very atmospheric.

FD, lets have some more audio for immersion pretty please.

It might help if you actually said what your issues with E:D audio are. It's generally pretty great, and not a homogeneously loud and tiring sound carpet like what that video shows.

Yep, the 'space' bit sounds and looks like what I would expect a 90s arcade game would be like made today. No thanks.

Most people highly praise FD's sound design, and rightly so; it's hugely impressive. I'm not sure what's being highlighted here in the cacophony of the CoD video; the rattles on the way to orbit are quite evocative, but the feeling gives is of a hastily kludged-together craft that could disintegrate itself at any moment. I've no idea if that's a deliberate story choice on Activision's part (it doesn't seem unlikely), but really isn't appropriate to the spacefaring history that Elite is depicting.

It's also worth mentioning that a lot of that stuff seems to be happening in the upper atmosphere - so CoD has a bit more leeway on the "sound travelling in space" thing (quite aside from a rather different attitude to realism in general) than FD for its fights.

To be honest FD made the sound in ED iconic, they are miles and miles away from this, not that it's bad.
What I see here, that I would also love in ED are more voices from your AI fighter pilots when we get them.

I also like the atmospheric breakaway mechanic used in CoD:IW, but we don't have atmosphere in ED yet, so we will just have to wait and see.

We also need need to remember that a lot of NMS players came to ED because it's more "realistic" than NMS.

I'm looking forward to CoD:IW it will be a good SP game, I think I will like the story, I'm not interested in the MP mode.

Tbh the sound in Elite Dangerous is incredible Jim and the team are doing a fantastic job.

The audio that we have in Elite is fine but it says alot when I can play quite happily with the sound turned off.

The addition of audio when docking at stations was great and added so much to the game. More audio like this throughout would be amazing. Chatter when in combat or when near NPC ships. Pirate encounters would benefit greatly with audio dialogue.

The audio in ED is second to none.

Except for that Scottish guy who tells me to "learn to fly my ship" when I use a docking computer.

He can      off.

You can play happily with the sound off?

I can't even play with desktop speakers (they are top notch, not your average speakers too) and have to have a studio quality headset on. Otherwise I feel I'm missing everything and lost in space.

It seems to me that you have never experienced the full soundscape of ED, most likely due to lack of a good set of headphones. If you don't already, get yourself a pair of Sennheiser HD202s, best headset for the price you pay (not the best headset in the world, don't get me wrong).

Also people, try turning the music off. It makes immersion infinitely better. I only keep station music on (not that I dislike the music. It's just immersion).

Yes, playing in ED with a good headset or earphones really make it a whole new game, I can't play just with speakers, no way...
