this is pretty nice, but I wanna know if its exclusively standalone or if it can be used for a vr headset on other systems like the personal computer and game consoles. that would be a game changer for me.

On their kickstarter page it says "If you want to enhance your content, connect a computer or console (Playstation or Xbox) into the HDMI and enjoy more graphic intensive games" so looks like your answer is yes. In that scenario it looks like the host PC will do all the grunt, but maybe somebody can come up with some nifty middleware for the onboard PC to handle some work too.
