Australia Roster Appreciation Post

Second dedicated pack! Do you think eventually all continents will get a second dedicated pack?
Personally, I doubt it.

North America doesn't need another dedicated pack, though it could still use a Native American building theme.

South America is the most likely, maybe an Amazon Animal Pack?

Europe is a hard pass for me, there's not enough interesting animals for another pack imo, and considering we already have four Europe-focused building themes (Classic, Arctic, Europe, Twilight), we really don't need a fifth.

Africa has enough animals for an animal pack, but we basically already got an Africa animal pack with the Arid Animal Pack.

Asia is fine honestly, the roster is probably the most solid out of any continent, and the few animals that we still need could easily be inserted into other packs.

I'm not necessarily convinced we'll get it within whatever the remaining support lifetime is (unless it magically stretches out into 2025 which I don't think is likely), but one area that I advocate for getting a dedicated pack is India. There's a lot of wildlife diversity in India, and while we've gotten most of the big-ticket icons there are tons of smaller species that would increase the diversity of the region. Here's how I'd draw up the pack:

1. Blackbuck- iconic Indian antelope, beautiful coloring, ZT1 staple. Probably the most necessary animal in this pack.
2. Sloth Bear- since the game started my goal has been "complete the bears," and we're so close! I'm confident we're getting the ABB and Spectacled Bear before the year closes out, so that leaves the sloth bear, the hardest to work in. With its long fur-lined muzzle and insectivorous diet, it offers something so unique and valuable among bear species.
3. Honey Badger- did you know these guys lived in India? I didn't, until I started researching for this. An iconic animal that the general public is familiar with, and we could always use more mustelids.
4. Lion-tailed macaque- a gorgeous monkey with a long bushy-tipped tail and a mane. Super unique, lives in a different environment to any of our current primates, and we are desperately in need of more.
5. Gaur- big cow. I don't really have any input on this guy, he just looks like he's on steroids and that's hilarious.
6. Indian Giant Squirrel- these guys are massive! With a maximum size of 1 foot 8 inches, not counting the tail, they can grow to be larger than the Fennec fox! Add to that their arboreal behaviors and their vibrant, rich color palette and you've got what I believe to be the most underrated prospective animal addition Frontier could make.
7. Filler- I don't really feel too strongly about the seventh slot, so pick from among good options- a second antelope in the massive nilgai, a second monkey like the grey langur, various birds, a deer species like the axis or sambar, the fishing cat, hog badgers, civets, any Himalayan species that don't get into a Mountain pack...
8. King Cobra- for once the exhibit animal isn't totally useless!

There's so much variety here, and while none of these are exactly top 10 wishlist animals they'd all add something to any zoo they were added to. This, along with obviously South America, is the only real candidate for a dedicated area pack in my eyes.

Why are we talking about indian wildlife in the australia appreciation post now?

Yeah, Australia and Oceania are now pretty well represented, as least for mammals and ground-birds. I would love the Tree Kangaroo and I recognize that the Echidna is still wanted by many and some consider both of them to be essential, but I personally do not. I also have the Grey Kangaroo and a Hairy Nosed Wombat in the upper regions of my want list, but I don't consider them essential either. Finally I've got the Numbat even further down my want list. Any of these would be welcome but I'm at the point I am happy with what we've got now.

Second dedicated pack! Do you think eventually all continents will get a second dedicated pack?
Some could still use a third:
  • I still want a forest pack for log cabins, camping, and NW Coast Native American Scenery. It should probably have at least one NA animal (looking at you, black bear!), but there is still stuff from Oceania and Europe that would fit nicely. If support went on for a lot longer, I could picture another good NA exclusive animal pack, but that's far from urgent.
  • Africa could support a Safari animal or scenery pack. It's not the most essential right now, though.
  • If support goes on, an Outback animal pack would be fun to boost marsupials. Again, not urgent.
A second dedicated pack:
  • South America could use at least two. An Amazon animal pack would be popular, and a Central America scenery pack could add some variety to the animal choices and some better props for Latin America.
  • Asia could support a South Asian animal pack easily and probably a East Asia Animal pack, too. Maybe one with Himalayan Scenery?
  • The only continent I have trouble picturing a pack for is Europe. There aren't many high-demand animals that could fill one at the moment, and there are already plenty of sets supporting European architecture. Trying out some options:
    • Mediterranean Pack (not strictly European): Barbary Macaque, Barbary Sheep, Genet, Great White Pelican, Hermann's Tortoise or Glass Lizard, and Greek architecture
    • European Animal Pack: Wild Boar, Mute Swan, Wisent, Eurasian Brown Bear, Pine Marten, White Stork, Wild Cat or Chamois, and Hermann's tortoise or Glass Lizard in Exhibit.
    • I don't think they are horrible packs, but the animals mostly aren't in demand at the moment. I would wait on them or put some of the animals into other packs.

I am very satisfied with the Oceania roster right now (not including birds or exhibits obviously). The last thing I see as really necessary is the Echidna. I'd like to see more marsupials but they aren't a priority for me anymore since we got the Devil.

I'd like to see the Virginia Opossum.
As far as actually Oceania goes, though, I think we need birds such as kookaburra, Black swan, maybe the brolga even?

Echidna and Tree Kangaroo are the Missing essentials in my opinion. I am slightly optimistic with the Echidna as it could reuse the quills for Porcupine. I am a bit pessimistic with the Tree Kangaroo as Frontier seems to avoid animals which are living mainly arboreal (potentially they Just do not work that fine still). Other animals from Oceania like the Quoll or the Numbat would be postive surprises but in my opinion they are far away from being an Essential.

I'm kind of doubting about the Tree Kangaroo as well and have been for a while. Even more so after this pack. After two regional packs, the second of which pretty much negates there being an island pack, I struggle to think just how many themes the Tree Kangaroo could work in. Arboreal and is one for sure, or some kind of wrap up finale pack. I guess they could do an endangered species pack as well.

Unfortunately if I had to choose between them probably or probably not showing up, I'm going with "probably not" right now. I hope to be wrong, they're really high up on my wishlist, not too far off from the things in my signature.

It also could come within a tropical rainforest or General forest themed Pack.

I noticed that the animals in the last two packs haven't been arboreal. The only exception is the sand cat for which they have plenty of climbing cat animations to re-use, and they don't climb often. They are also updating the orangutan brachiation. Maybe they are working on new climbing mechanics and saving arboreal species until they've gotten something better worked out? Maybe it's just my optimism, but I think they could be working on climbing.

The roster is really good now for Australia, enough that I would not complain of no more were added this year.

And if more were to be added I would hope it would be at least these to round out Australia even more.
  1. Echidna - very common and well known species
  2. fresh water crocodile- widely distributed in Australia and if you want a nod to Steve Irwin a lot of these were kept at the Australian zoo. (Another sad fact, fresh water crocodiles are easily bred and kept for most crocodile leather products)
  3. perentie - largest varanid in Australia
  4. exhibit - olive python
  5. exhibit - thorny devil
  6. exhibit - bearded dragon
  7. exhibit - red bellied black snake
  8. exhibit - corroboree frog
  9. exhibit - green tree frog

There is a decent interest in animals that climb (wolverine, new world monkies, coati, tree kangaroo, baboons + more) it's a possibility

Why would you think that?
Id say now that all the boring choices are iut of the way i expect an island pack for next summer even more as its the perfect bland of a clear theme and lots to add.
I made an entire thread about that with the planet zoo in 2024 thing where i just posted an island pack and lets just say the few people still reading that thread seem to like it alot.
Islands are imo the perfect way to combine reptiles, birds, domestics, primates and a few standout popular pics to give us a roster with everything the gamd needs without overdoing it

The more the Oceania roster increases the better and better the Dingo inclusion becomes in hindsight. Always loved the doggos and I’m happy now that more animals are added to the continent they’re becoming more appreciated
Yes! Now that we have the Devil, alot of people who were initialy angry at the Dingo for stealing the spot for the Devil might be more ok with it now. I know I am.
