Auto-docking just got me killed...

Really... what the hell. I'm friendly with this station, been doing runs regularly back and forth to it trading cargo. I have an auto-dock cause I'm lazy. This time it slams me into the side of the station and does 10% hull damage. And I'm stuck. ok... that's no good. Well I manage to slowly work my way out and let it take over again. Station is still friendly. Confirmed this. Green. All good. I make it through the portal and all of a sudden the guns open fire and the station turns red. I am not carrying anything illegal, I don't have hardpoints deployed. And of course auto-dock means I can't do anything other than sit there and let myself get blown away.

So in addition to 375k lost due to the bugs earlier tonight with disconnects, this causes me to lose yet another 200k from my cargo and 70k from the insurance/fines/etc that DID NOT EXIST. Hurray.

This is hilarious. Well done. You're playing the game when you know its broken, you continue to play it then you trust your valuable cargo to an autopilot.

Natural selection. Fly it yourself.

The docking computer needs some serious work.

Since I upgraded to "large" ships, it has stopped working. It may get you inside the station but then it gets stuck to the left of the landing platform, a bit up from it. It can then sit in that position until the time runs out.

Oh and Izo, if we wanted to "Fly it ourselves" we would not be wasting an Equipment slot on it. Once you leave behind the cheap small and medium ships and you get into the large ones you will also discover the fun in skipping having to try to fit a type 9 into the mailbox....

Agreed... trying to fit a large ship into that stupidly small port is ridiculous. That's the main reason I started using auto-dock. Don't get me started on losing 1% hull (since I have no shields) on each "successful" landing.

What really gets me is what must have been going through the station's security forces' minds. "Oh hey, it's Lethargus. I like that guy, he's my friend and brings me all that stuff I like to buy." "Oh man! 400cr bounty for something not even defined! YES KILL HIM! THOSE 400 CREDITS ARE MIIIIIINE!"

You should have seen the auto-pilot. It would fly you straight into planets and stars. Of course all with the help of time compression, they removed that for online play of course.

Auto-docking gets AI killed by the truck load. No way in hell would I ever put one of those things on my ship.

I do agree the docking computer needs serious work.

Anyway, Lethargus, you had my sympathies until I read that you let it take over for a second go after it just crashed you.

The port is freaking enormous.

The docking computer definately has it's issues - I still fit one to most of my trading ships, but I treat it like my children - I let them play, but I always supervise and intervene when they are about to do something dangerous. The docking computer needs the same.

Just as children take time to develop cognitive function, perhaps in time the docking computer will develop and grow in it's ability to anticipate, plan and react to circumstances.

Don't use auto docking any more since beta 2 as it tried to dock my ship on the outside of the station a few times.

Happened to me a while ago... Lost the cargo and my asp and was 19k short on insurance. yeaaaaaaa really sucks. I actually did post about that you shouldn't use auto dock at the moment, it's buggy.

That's why I call the Docking Computer "Marvin".

Qualifications :
- extremely sophisticated
- quite heavy
- feels permanently underchallenged
- highly depressive
- suicidal tendencies

In case you haven't seen him yet, meet Marvin :
LOL, that is an insult to Marvin he might be melancholic and has suicidal tendencies but he isn't an idiot unlike the Docking Computer:)

I used a Docking Computer once, in Elite Dangerous.

It had just been added, in Beta phase. I bought one, triggered the auto-dock, and listened to the nice, nostalgic Blue Danube from where I was...

...hiding behind my chair, trying not to look at the endless stream of near-death experiences on the screen!

I then thought, "how nice", and sold the thing. Never touched one since! :D

Ah.. but the salvage rights!
That is where the money is!

As others have said, you're trusting your life to a computer and you died. You should be flying yourself and don't buy the autodock. This is your fault.

One incident that still makes me chuckle to remember was in the last stage beta.

I had a Type 6, and was allocated pad 15 to land on. The docking computer flew into the station, down the centreline and then sat there, repeatedly headbutting the spike at the back of the coriolis stations trying to get above the pad before descending to it.

Hehe, that's true I guess. Marvin from the Movie actually always got the job done indeed (at least after filing his complaints about the benign task) :D

Would be epic to get a similar voice reaction from our Docking Computer after putting it to work *g*

I just imagined instead of "Docking request granted" - melancholic voice "and now again I have to help this lazy pilot fitting this huge T9 into such a small gate and nobody will even say me thank you after engines disengaged" LOL
