Newcomer / Intro Auto field maintenance system

Can anybody explain how does it work? I just bought one for my new Dolphin, but I cannot understand how it is ammunitioned and operated.
 
When you click on a damaged module in Modules tab, there will be a "Repair" option, if you have AFMU on board. The module goes offline while the repairs are being made. (So don't repair FSD or thrusters in supercruise, otherwise you're in for an abrupt stop. ;) )
The higher class and rating of the AFMU the more ammo it has and repairs modules faster.
Ammo can be synthesized from materials, or restocked at stations, like normal ammo.

AFMU cannot repair hull, powerplant and itself. (But it can be repaired by second AFMU)
It can even repair a cracked canopy, but can't fix the hole, once it's breached. (Kind of like in the ME:A Prologue)

So, no possibilitu at all to repair hull or powerplant?

Not without reaching a base with a repair facility, although in an emergency there is an option on the functions tab of the righthand cockpit menu called reboot repair which will cannibalise your other modules to bring anything offline to 1% which will restore enough function to survive and get home eventually. Of course it wont work for hull as if your hull has reached zero everything that used to be inside it is drifting through space on its own.
