Auto Launch killed me!

Learn from the mistakes of others; your insurance money will never last long enough to make them all yourself.

Todays lesson: Don't go AFK while the ADC is in control of your ship. It is a devious little <insert favourite swear word here>, and will do it's damndest to kill you if it thinks it can get away with it.

It does that some times. And sometimes it gets you killed for other reasons. Some commanders have an irrational dislike of other people using that module.

I'm a real pilot who owns several private planes. I just had an automatic landing system installed, totally hands off. While we were testing it, it failed twice before successfully landing us on the third try. Both me and my co-pilot had to take control of the thing on approach, because we knew it was failing. I'm not ready to trust my life to the thing yet. I do trust my auto navigation system to get me from point A to B.

Commercial pilots only rely on autopilot once they are in the air, but take over as pilots when taking off and landing.

As a bush pilot, we had no auto anything. You fly the plane from take off to landing, hands on all the way, including all navigation.

So, yes, real pilots don't depend on automation, but use it as an aid.

But in this thread, we were speaking of the ADC and auto launch, and the OP's statement it killed him, but I doubt he is a real pilot.

Sorry, I just have a different take on automation in the cockpit when a human is supposed to be the pilot.
Of course you are right, the OP definitely isn't a real spaceship Commander ………

Hi dunrankin :)

I use auto launch, mainly on the large ships (Cutter, Type 10, Beluga etc.). I can do it manually but it's a squeeze sometimes. One of the other reasons is whilst in auto launch I can take my time scanning other ships in the area for data.
For some reasons though, I've never been able to figure out, the game doesn't always pick out the setting for my joystick speed control, usually when I've just booted up the game and launch either manually or auto. As soon as I realize the ship is moving forward or backward without my control I hit 'x' on the keyboard. This will bring the ship to a stop, then I can use the speed control as normal, or leave the ship to exit the station on auto. Then throughout the game the auto launch functions pretty much 100%.
I must state though I never leave the game whilst the auto docking / auto launch is in play. Not strictly true for auto docking, when I set the ship for auto docking I can leave the game (that function) and for example, look at the system map or galactic map whilst the ship is docking.

Sometimes on auto launch there's been so many ships leaving or entering the station that the timer has nearly run out, so I've had to cancel the function and manually leave the station myself. Another thing to watch out for when auto docking or auto launch is if you leave the game to say go to the loo, or get up to make some tea etc. you can inadvertently brush against the throttle control without realizing it (been there done that) with the resulting obvious conclusions. :D

My advice is using these auto functions is it's 99% okay...it's that 1% you've got to watch out for, so it's best to be there playing the game while these two functions are in operation.

Jack :)

Let me correct that for you...
Todays lesson: Self inflicted, no sympathy. Don't ever use a ADC...that is all.

I simply don't understand why people use them. They take up a slot, they are slow...docking is one of the easiest and fastest things you can do in ED manually. Even the large ships in ED are easy to dock.

I use one, guess according to you I can't fly. But I am that good I don't have to fill every available slot in all my ships with HRP/MRP/SCB modules just to survive - I am 'GUD' enough not to need them :D

Docking big ships is about knowing where the cockpit is. On a Beluga, for instance its right at the very front at the very bottom (not in the huge black window), so you need to target yourself to the bottom of the slot. In the Annies you are way up high at the back so aim more near the top. Easy once you realise, and then you can turn the computer off.

Elite 1984 docking computer was fallable too :)

Launched my vette from a station using auto launch. Next thing I know I've been destroyed and owe 800 credits in fines! Cost me over 44 million credits insurance! Glad I can afford it.

Almost happened to me with my t9. Luckily I wasn't afk and get control back.
1 of 20 Autolaunches shreds my shields down to one ring or deactivates them, because the autolaunch leads the ship to much to the right and crashes me or get me stucked at the entrance.

Main thing about most of the raised issues is the there is no video evidence - there are several failure types that really need documenting so that fdev can fix them. Off the top of my head:
  • Cutter trying to get into any Asteroid Base (that's a pretty reliable way to die)
  • Some stations have large structures that the DC will dash you against
  • Auto-launch largish ship - in holding pattern waiting on other ships will sometimes drive you into the station wall
  • Some ships (Cutter?) will ram the station just below the slot when Auto-Launching (not seen that one much)
I'll have to try and record some fails after the Patch is out - if I remember.

Mostly if you have shields then you will hear the ADC trying to kill you and can recover. You do have shields OP? ;)

Damn I would get a replacement ADC then. The most I have every had half of one right go simply because I wanted to see how far it would go. Never had an instance of losing that much shield, I would have taken over control way before that!

My replacement is...deactivated auto launch. 😀
I would have take over control, if I'd seen that would happen.

I have an advanced docking controller on my mission runner krait mkii.

I find it very useful for saving me from making the effort of seeking out the pad location continuously when running a mass of missions.

It has done a couple of weird things, like ramming me into the wall to the right of the slot continuously trying to leave the station, but i was onhand to stop the matter. But 99. 9% of the time it has no issues at all.

I do not leave it totally unattended though, so it has never caused any deaths.
