auto repair matinence unit, how to use?

Heres the problem, I installed the best repair module on my cobra when I bought it and someone shot out the engines and most of the rest of the ship

Now im dead in the water and cant get it to work, the instructions online are:

Turn off the damaged module - Check

Select Repair.........there is no repair option

How do I activate it?

You can't use it to repair thrusters, power plant, or hull. You can set it to repair itself though.

The thing is pretty useless, right?

I brought one with me on an exploration trip, but didn't use it.
It seems that as you cycle module power on the modules tab on the right, you can select "repair" (a crossed box).
So there's no option to repair key modules?
Edit: It's supposed to repair over time, so ... dunno.
