Newcomer / Intro auto repair unit

Is it any good? Sounds like a good idea to fit one to a long range explorer ship. The obvious choice would be a D3 (on the Asp) for reasons of range/weight.

What will it repair, and is it genuinely automatic or does it need turning on or something?

It has no weight, so all you need to consider is cost and power consumption. The bigger and higher class, the more it can repair before it is depleted (uses "ammo" to repair)
The problem is that it does not repair critical components like powerplant and hull. I brought one with me to the core, and it has repaired lots so far, but my canopy is cracked, and my powerplant is beat up.

I bought one for my Vulture, as it lets me stay out fighting for longer. Just need to keep an eye on the power plant & hull values, and the visible state of the canopy. If any of them drop too low then I'll go and get properly repaired. For my Asp I bought three before going out exploring.

EDIT: I didn't worry too much about the power draw as I keep them turned off. When I use them I ensure other things are switched off so that they have enough power to operate.

Power consumption for the auto repair unit on an explorer is of nearly zero concern. You can keep the repair unit powered off at all times except when you are repairing things, at which point you will be powering other modules off in order to repair them anyway so having to power down a few extra modules shouldn't be problematic.

I think mine currently is a B5. They dont repair Power Plant, Hull or your screen, so only help a bit and are a nicety rather than an essential. But as they weight 0 and you might as well put one in a spare slot.
Always use it in normal space. Fixing several of the components in FSD will cause an emergancy stop meaning even more damage.

So if I fit 2, will they repair twice as much? I've got 2 class 3 slots I could use in the current build.

Yes they will. They have a certain amount of "points" used to fix a percentage of damage. Bear in mind that larger ones will have more "points" to repair. Take a look, it may be better to fix one large then 2 smaller ones.
