Automated Mining Factories

So, I wonder if we'll get these when we get planetary landings. Ala FFE and Frontier. Would be an interesting mechanic I think. Dependent on finding an out of the way planet with mineral rich properties.

It would also open up the possibilities of someone else finding your claim and pilfering it. Hmmmm, I see lots of potential here.

Oh, when I opened the thread I thought you were referring to an automated asteroid mining in space...but you're speaking strictly about planet side...hmm...that would be cool...and yeah the mechanic for pilfering would really offer pirates some good things to scan/look for. But there would have to be some rules setup...or automated defenses...or just make sure you do it in a high sec system if you want npcs to help guard it.

Landing on some remote metal rich planet with my mining machines flashing away in front of me, and the milky way shining across the heavens... I also want to strap navigation lights onto my utility mounts, stand next to my ship and watch those flash too!

You would have a coded beacon that you alone get a ping for, so only you know where the mining factory is. You need to return every now and then to empty it's hoppers.

Pirates would be on the lookout for odd readings. Obviously the further out you go, the less likely the planet has already been mined out and therefore the greater the reward.

So many options for interesting game play.

Sounds like you're making a case for the return of the old MB4 mining machine, which for the record I'm all for. But we need planetary landings first.

I'm pretty sure FD will reintroduce it once the planet expansion will come out.

Now I need to write down the next metal-rich planet I tag...

I'm way ahead of you, I've already noted down a few great systems within 600 LY of the edge of populated space ;)

Obviously it will require planetary landing and yep Eagle, it was the MB4's that came to mind :)

Oh wow...i have been kinda..whatever about the planetary landings...was more excited for the space stuff...but based off of an idea like this alone...My interest in them and the possibilities has exponentially grown...this would be awesome...such a simple idea to add so much more complexity and persistence - +1

There is a similar thing in Eve, although there's no planetary landings. You can setup extraction facilities on a planet, and if it's in low security space, these can then be used as a combat area for players of Dust 514, which is the console FPS set in the same universe and on the same servers. These players can then sway the ownership of said facilities and the area in general and can be supported, or hampered, by Eve players in orbit firing orbital bombardments from specially equipped ships.

At least, that's how I understood the Eve / Dust 514 interaction; I stopped playing around about the time this was introduced, so I'm sure someone will be along shortly to correct me if I'm wrong :)

It would introduce some intriguing gameplay opportunities if we had similar in ED, that's for sure :)

What I'm waiting for. That thrill of finding a planet with high ore content, but with high gravity. Do I need to upgrade my thrust before I try landing.........whoops maybe I should have....pancake.

Eve.... I never saw any comparison. First person as opposed to 3rd person makes for a completely different game due to the immersion factor. Eve doesn't really simulate anything as far as I can tell, other than point and click.

That's completely correct. But the gameplay added by Dust 514, which is in the same galaxy and runs on the same servers adds the first person bit. Admittedly, it's across two different platforms and game play types, but what I was trying to get across is the whole package. Similar types of game play would be great if both sides of that were rolled into one and dropped into ED :)
